Maintenance Worker III to join our
Sewer Operations Division.
The Maintenance Worker III performs advanced-level duties in the maintenance, repair, and operation of the municipal sanitary sewer collection system. This role works under minimal supervision, ensuring the safe and effective performance of field operations.
Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions, or indoors depending on individual work assignments. Work environment includes exposure to noise, dust and traffic with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, lifting heavy objects and operating equipment.
This job may prepare an incumbent for career progression by gaining additional, more complex, skills.
This class works under general supervision, developing work methods and sequences.
Work Schedule
Monday through Friday 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM Overtime as necessary and mandatory during emergency situations

Essential Functions: Guides, helps, and advises less experienced maintenance workers with various tasks described below:
Works with crew in the inspection, maintenance, and rehabilitation of the Town's storm water and sanitary sewer system. Opens manholes, valves, and hydrants as directed.
Deploys traffic control devices and is exposed to traffic conditions, noise grease, mists and dust.
Performs storm and sanitary sewer cleaning and inspection utilizing high velocity and mechanical cleaning methods, special inspection vehicles and associated equipment.
Performs stream maintenance activities, leak investigations, dye tracing and other utility connection and location surveys and conformation inspections.
Enters and works in confined space environment, using personal protective equipment with operating limits of 310 lbs. All work is performed under Virginia and OSHA health, safety, trenching, confined space and uniform traffic control standards.
Assists with repairs for water line breaks regularly and snow removal on a seasonal basis.
Assists with water system maintenance, operation and repairs. This work includes hydrant flow tests, seasonal night-time hydrant flushing, hydrant repairs and replacement, water main repairs and other duties as assigned.
Coordinates and confirms utility mark-off prior to excavation.
Operates excavation equipment, compaction equipment, water system valve maintenance trailer, associated trucks and vehicles, paving equipment, utility location equipment, leak detection devices.
Assists the asphalt crew in laying and forming asphalt; lays new asphalt on old water breaks. Follows AWWA procedures for disinfection of materials used in water system repair and replacement.
Repairs, rebuilds, cleans and maintains storm drains and catch basins; designs, fabricates and installs a variety of street and traffic signs.
Operates large and heavy equipment, such as, a single axle dump truck to remove snow and ice; operates leaf machine; drives truck to remove leaves from the curbside; operates street sweeper to clean all streets throughout spring and summer months
; operates sanitation truck to collect trash, yard waste and recyclables; monitors crew to ensure safety; empties dumpsters and travels to proper disposal facility; maintains truck by washing and greasing; operates backhoe; uses a variety of tools and power tools such as hammers, screw drivers, wrenches, sockets, drills, powered grinders, jigsaws, rakes, shovels, and pole diggers; operates pole and chain saws.
Refers to rules and regulations, policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, publications and reference texts.
Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment including commercial vehicles.
Uses a variety of tools such as, but not limited to, brooms and shovels and a variety of supplies such, including safety supplies.
Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the town manager, supervisor, co-workers, the general public and, occasionally, public officials.
Trains and observes employee adherence to rules; reports back to immediate supervisor.
Diagnoses, troubleshoots, communicates and, in some instances, completes routine maintenance and minor repairs to equipment, small engines, specialized excavation, paving, cleaning, and inspection equipment and associated vehicles. Assists with maintaining an inventory of spare parts and materials for work areas assigned.

Flags traffic in work areas for workers and drivers.
Reports to work for snow or other emergencies as assigned.
