Description Under general supervision, performs skilled work on the maintenance and repair of treatment plant equipment; participates in facility maintenance; maintains records of work assignments; may operate treatment equipment as required. Examples of Duties As a maintenance mechanic in water and wastewater treatment facilities, operates, maintains and repairs mechanical equipment to include diesel and gas engines, electric motors, blowers, pumps, valves, chemical feeders, filters, conveyors, recorders, meters, compressors, and boilers; lubricates and oils machinery. Assures all backup systems are maintained and equipment related to providing essential power sources remain in operating condition at all times. Disassembles tunes, cleans, repairs and replaces damaged or worn parts; overhauls, reassembles, reinstalls and returns to full operating condition all equipment and materials integral to system operations. Assembles and installs new components, sets-up and integrates into existing system operations. Assists electrical / instrumentation workers disassemble, install and reassemble system equipment during instrumentation repair projects. Uses test equipment and schematics to diagnose and troubleshoot equipment and systems. Reads and interprets electrical, hydraulic, piping and mechanical drawings and schematics. Supervises subordinates in the repair and maintenance of treatment equipment; performs preventative maintenance inspections of equipment; maintains records of maintenance activities. Performs minor repairs and routine maintenance of air conditioning and heating systems; performs minor repairs to plumbing fixtures; participates in routine building maintenance such as carpentry, painting, masonry, plumbing and mechanical work. Utilizes gas and electric welding and cutting tools to fabricate parts and repair and maintain machinery and equipment. Assists in the purchasing and procurement of parts and services. Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the job. Typical Qualifications Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with air brakes endorsement or equivalent upon application or ability to obtain within sixty (60) days from hire date. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school or GED. Requires two (2) years experience in the building or mechanical trades. Requires working knowledge of methods, practices, tools, materials and techniques in the operation, maintenance and repair of treatment machinery. Requires working knowledge of principles applicable to water and wastewater treatment plant operation and maintenance. Knowledge of safety practices, procedures and standards applicable to industrial plant operations and maintenance. Requires ability to read blueprints and mechanical drawings. Requires ability to perform strenuous mechanical and manual labor, often in limited work spaces. Requires ability to operate a forklift. Must be able to follow safety procedures and rules including those pertaining to permit required for confined spaces. Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form. Ability to operate a computer, tablet, and related electronic devices with appropriate training. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, vendors, and the general public. Ability to work various shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as assigned. Must also be available to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day if necessary. Ability to work independently with limited supervision. Requires knowledge of the geographical area in the City of Rock Island. Assists in the general maintenance and housekeeping of City owned property and buildings. Requires ability to operate vehicles skillfully and safely; observes safe driving practices. Requires ability to perform work in a variety of weather conditions. Comply with established safety standards and rules including the use of safety equipment, personal protective equipment and other devices and procedures necessary for protection. Selected candidates must meet a residency requirement, which includes living in the state of Illinois and must report within 60 minutes after being called into work for an overtime assignment.
