Job Summary: The Mainframe Systems Programmer will play a crucial role in maintaining and upgrading the zOS Operating System and supporting users. This experienced systems programmer will work alongside a small team of technical experts to provide systems support, troubleshoot issues, and assist in upgrading the mainframe operating systems. The role offers an opportunity to apply and expand technical knowledge in a dynamic, team-oriented environment, with potential for occasional remote work.
Key Responsibilities: - zOS Systems Programming: Maintain, upgrade, and support the zOS Operating System, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
- Hardware and Software Management: Work with hardware, including basic understanding of FICON/ESCON connectivity, DASD architecture, and cryptographic coprocessors.
- zOS Experience: Manage catalogs, ISPF/SDSF, Unix System Services, RACF, and JES parameters; handle SYS1.PARMLIB and SYS1.PROCLIB members.
- SYSPLEX Management: Manage zOS SYSPLEX including dataset definitions and coupling facilities.
- Storage & Tape Management: Oversee Dataset/Storage/Disk/Tape management including tasks like allocation, backup, restore, and the use of tools like DFDSS and DFSMS.
- Problem Resolution: Debug and resolve mainframe OS issues, supporting various z/OS levels from older to current versions.
- Teaching & Mentoring: Assist in educating users and team members on zOS systems and processes.
- Weekend / Off-Shift Coverage: Provide coverage during weekends and maintenance windows as needed.
Required Qualifications: Experience & Skills: - Expertise in Mainframe zOS systems programming, including installation and maintenance of zOS and IBM software.
- Proficiency in zOS catalog management, ISPF/SDSF, Unix System Services, RACF, JES parameters, and system logs.
- Strong experience in dataset/storage/tape management using tools like DFDSS, DFSMS, and DFHSM.
- Ability to debug and resolve mainframe operating system software issues (across multiple z/OS levels).
- Experience with RACF administration for userids, user groups, and resource management.
- Experience in installing IBM Software products using zOSMF and CBPDO.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently as needed.
- Preferred Qualifications:
Additional zOS Expertise: - VTAM, TCPIP, OSA, Virtual Interfaces, HiperSockets, and VSWITCH.
- Experience with JES2 and JES3 systems.
- zVM system experience, including support for z/OS and z/VSE Guest systems.
- Experience with Linux on z Systems and zCX (z/OS Container Extensions).
- Familiarity with DS8000 Disk Subsystem, FlashCopy, and Tape Library management.
- Experience with z/OSMF and related workflows.
- iSeries knowledge would be a plus.
Education & Certifications: - Bachelor's degree preferred with at least 5-7 years of work experience in zOS systems programming or equivalent experience.
