As a Machinist 1 you will be responsible for the functions outlined below:


Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for demonstrating commitment to and leadership of environmental health and safety principles, policies and procedures.
  • Conforms to and operates within the framework of all applicable operator work instructions, SOPs, quality, and safety procedures.
  • Maintain proper housekeeping of work area; Keep all machines, tools, and equipment and work surfaces free of oil, grease, etc.
  • This job is mainly one of maintaining cell productivity by troubleshooting production problems and performing proven setups under the guidance of Manufacturing Engineer and/or Supervisor as well as a willingness to operate machinery as necessary.
  • Proficient at the operation of all machines and processes in Cell.
  • Make offsets to tools to produce good parts.
  • Preset tools as needed; calibrate probes and tool setter.
  • Actively contribute to process improvement in assigned areas
  • Inspect parts fully after a tool or program change.
  • Clear and correct common machine alarms including Automatic Tool Changer alarms.
  • Troubleshoot machine issues affecting part production or quality.
  • Assist and monitor process flow to meet production requirements set by Cell Supervisor.
  • Perform repetitive inspection of parts using precision instruments such as micrometers, height gages, calipers and indicators.
  • Assist with training machine operators in the performance of their assigned duties.
  • Reports to a Cell Supervisor or other production manager.
  • Rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  • Participates in the companys efforts to continuously improve in Safety, 6S, Quality, Delivery and Productivity.
  • Expected to be a contributor to the company standards on high integrity, safety, fair and equitable treatment and a positive work environment.
  • Other responsibilities as deemed appropriate or necessary by management.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • High school diploma with typically 2-4 years of prior manufacturing experience or a combination of related experience, education and/or training to sufficiently and successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Two-year technical degree or approved apprenticeship in related coursework (i.e. computer numeric control mill or lathe) is a plus.
  • Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job.
  • Works within established procedures associated with the specific job function under immediate supervision.
  • Has knowledge of 5S and lean concepts and ability to help move forward with achieving department goals.
  • Has knowledge of metalworking tools, workholding and other common concepts, practices and procedures within the field.
  • Teamwork and the ability to cooperate and work proactively with others is a must.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, machine tool programming languages (G & M codes) and blueprint reading.
  • Must be able to interpret machine tool programming languages (such as G & M codes) to anticipate machine action, to use Distance to Go, and to use feed rate and spindle speed overrides to perform troubleshooting and changeovers.
  • Know how to identify which tools create which features in a given process.
  • Ability to identify source of visual or dimensional defects and correct them.
  • Know how to properly assemble tooling for a specific purpose.
  • How to align center-cutting tools to a part feature.
  • Understand the basics of workholding and tool clamping.
  • Align workholding or adjust work coordinates for proper machine function.
  • How to use a test indicator to align work machine axes within acceptable limits.
  • Understanding of basic programming strategies.
  • Be able to recognize when something is wrong with a process or product and troubleshoot.
  • Must be able to manage time efficiently.
  • Great attention to detail and excellent record keeping skills.
  • Self-motivated; willing to put in extra effort and hours as needed.
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and work under deadlines and pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize and work with our Permission to Play Values.
  • It is understood employees may be assigned to other departments, functional groups, and/or shifts as deemed necessary by management

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and carry awkward items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires intermittent standing, walking, sitting and bending throughout the work day.
  • Must be able to work in a manufacturing environment, to include working in and around machinery, exposure to noise and chemicals, lights/lasers, etc.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protection Equipment as required by your position and/or Company policy.
