AI/Machine Learning Engineer - Part-Time

About the Role
We're looking for an innovative, driven individual to help accelerate the development of a private, open-source-based AI platform currently in beta. You'll be working alongside a lead engineer and directly with the founder to bring a working AI prototype to life - focused on delivering AI-driven imaging and chat capabilities for an oil & gas client.
This is a hands-on opportunity to get deeply involved in AI product architecture, machine learning modeling, and system optimization using cutting-edge open-source tools. Ideal for a local student or recent grad with a passion for AI, systems, and turning ideas into real-world tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and deploy machine learning models using open-source frameworks.
- Work on system architecture design and model tuning.
- Maintain and optimize private AI infrastructure (on-prem AI server).
- Collaborate with existing engineer on data handling and modeling strategies.
- Build and maintain databases using SQL and Python.
- Integrate and optimize tools like Olamma, MidJourney-style image generation, and open-source GPT chat UIs.
- Support hardware/software integration (Ubuntu Linux, NVIDIA GPU software, firewall and server configuration).
- Prototype and test AI imaging + chat applications tailored for an oil & gas use case.
- Develop and maintain clear, thorough technical documentation for all systems, models, and processes.
- Document AI workflows, model training pipelines, data preprocessing steps, and deployment configurations.
- Ensure reproducibility and handoff readiness by creating well-organized documentation and diagrams.
Tech Stack & Tools
- Languages: Python, SQL, Java (nice to have)
- Libraries/Frameworks: Pandas, PyTorch, Open-source GPT
- Tools: NVIDIA GPU stack, Ubiquiti/Unifi, Linux (Ubuntu)
- AI/ML: Chat AI, AI imaging, model deployment, MidJourney-style tools
- Documentation: Markdown, Jupyter Notebooks, Confluence (or similar)
Ideal Candidate
- student or recent grad in Computer Science, Data Science, or related field
- Familiarity with open-source AI tools and GPU-accelerated computing
- Hands-on experience with Python for ML (e.g., Pandas, PyTorch)
- Comfortable working with Linux-based systems
- Passion for machine learning, AI, and turning theory into prototypes
- Understands the importance of accurate documentation in scalable AI system design
- Curious, self-directed, and eager to contribute ideas
