Locum Consultant In Paediatric Cardiac Anaesthesia

Thisis a 10PA locum appointment for a Consultant Paediatric Cardiac Anaesthetist.This post will be offered with a six-month contract and is to commence as soonas possible.

Thispost will deliver 10PAs supporting the cardiac anaesthetic paediatric team atthe Leeds General Infirmary at Leeds.

Thesuccessful applicant should hold accreditation in the FRCA in the Royal Collegeof Anaesthetics or equivalent, and should be on the Specialist Register, orwithin six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currentlyin a training programme within the UK or have references which have beenauthorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Applicantsshould have established skills in paediatric cardiac anaesthesia and haveundertaken advanced training in this area.Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment toteaching and service development are essential.

Main duties of the job

Provisionof Anaesthesia for children requiring cardiac surgery and investigations suchas cardiac catheterisation and MRI.

Supervisionof patients following anaesthesia.

Contributeto Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings.

Tolink with consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams withinthe surgical Clinical Support Units and across the Trust.

Tocontribute to research, teaching and new developments within the Trust.

Towork with other consultant colleagues in the provision of a comprehensivepaediatric anaesthetic service in the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust.

Todevelop and/or consolidate expertise in paediatric anaesthesia.

Tomaintain and expand the excellence of teaching and research already establishedwithin the Trust.

Tosupport service plans for the specialty, taking account of the changes inclinical practice and new technologies available.

Toparticipate in and progress Clinical Governance.

About us

Thispost will deliver 10 PAs supporting the paediatric cardiac anaesthetic team.This is a post within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The base for thispost is at the Leeds General Infirmary site where the Leeds Childrens hospitalis situated. The successful applicant will join an existing paediatric team of29 consultant paediatric anaesthetists. This team is part of a larger Trustteam of over 150 consultant anaesthetists who have a wide range of subspecialtyinterests and responsibilities.

Job responsibilities

Provision of Anaesthesia for childrenrequiring cardiac surgery and investigations such as cardiac catheterisationand MRI.

Perioperative care of babies andchildren presenting for heart surgery and investigatrions

Contribute to SpecialistMulti-disciplinary team meetings.

To maintain and expand the excellenceof teaching and research already established within the Trust

To participate in and progressClinical Governance

To support service plans for thespecialty, taking account of the changes in clinical practice and newtechnologies available.

To work with other consultantcolleagues in the provision of a comprehensive paediatric anaesthetic servicein the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust

To work collaboratively withconsultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within thesurgical Clinical Support Units and across the Trust

Person Specification Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients & colleagues demonstrated by one of the following
  • Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English. OR
  • Achieved the minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the following categories in academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application -
  • Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (An overall minimum score of 7.5) OR
  • Achieved the minimum Grade B across all 4 of the following categories in the Occupational English Test (OET) in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application
  • Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (You must provide your candidate number)
  • Medically fit to fulfil ALL aspects of the post, and to be able to respond quickly to emergencies, as necessary. Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice
Additional Requirements
  • Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:
  • CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview)
  • CESR (or) European Community Rights
Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit
  • Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
  • Well organised and skilled in good time management.
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
  • Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
  • Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops
  • Evidence of involvement in Quality Improvement
  • Attendance at recognised management course.
Clinical Experience and Career Progression
  • Should have completed at least 12 months in a recognised training programme in paediatric anaesthesia and is trained in paediatric cardiac anaesthesia
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in paediatric cardiac anaesthesia
  • Specifically, he/she must demonstrate advanced training in paediatric anaesthesia.
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
  • 12 months additional training in Paediatric cardiac anaesthesia
