LIVE-IN RESIDENT ASSISTANT/DORM PARENT - PART-TIME (EVENINGS & WEEKENDS)

Apex International Education Partners, LLC (APEX) is seeking a professional and reliable, year-round Live-In Resident Assistant/Dorm Parent for our international high school student dormitory located in Derby, Connecticut housing over 70 F-1 students.

The Resident Assistant/Dorm Parent position is a live-in position during the academic year and summer.

FREE ROOM & BOARD

Room, board, meals (American breakfast & Chinese lunch/dinner), Wi-Fi, and other utilities are included. Live-in space is a fully-furnished, one-bedroom, one-adult apartment with a private full bathroom and full kitchen. No smokers. Student meals are included and offered to Resident Assistants/Dorm Parents in the main campus dining hall. International F-1 high school students that live in the dormitory attend local, private high schools and summer enrichment camps during the day.

PART-TIME WORK SCHEDULE

This is a part-time position working mainly in the evenings during the week and every other weekend. Resident Assistants/Dorm Parents may attend class and/or work another job during weekdays when dormitory students are in school.

Live-In Resident Assistants/Dorm Parents are scheduled to be:

On-Duty:
  • 3 weeknights (M,T,W, and/or Th) per week from 6:00PM-9:00PM
    • On-Call those same evenings from 9:00PM until 6:30AM the following morning AND
On-Duty:
  • Every other weekend (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) from 5:30PM-9:00PM
    • On-Call from Friday evening through the following Monday morning when not On-Duty.
During "On-Duty" hours, Live-In RAs/Dorm Parents will be expected to be in the dormitory and working with the students. Total dedicated On-Duty hours expected to be about 9-20 hours per week.

During evening "On-Call" hours, Live-In RAs/Dorm Parents will be expected to be in the dormitory, overseeing the dormitory residents and be available (by phone call, text, or in-person) to address any student issues and handle any emergencies.

During daytime, weekend "On-Call" hours, Live-In RAs/Dorm Parents will be expected to be nearby the dormitory (30-minute driving distance), and be available (by phone call, text, or in-person) to address any student issues and handle any emergencies.

This position is year-round and includes regular hours during the academic year and summer. Hours and days may vary based on need.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for the overall safety and well-being of dormitory students. This includes, but not limited to:
  • Assist international residents in their adjustment to roommate and community living.
  • Follow up with any student who may have been absent from school due to illness or injury.
  • Address and resolve any student issues.
  • Mentor, guide and support students. Be a positive role-model.
  • Fully engage with students at meals, tutoring sessions, activities and events.
  • Listen to and understand student needs and follow up accordingly.
  • Assist in the daily operations of the dormitory such as study hall hours, room check-ins, curfew hours, and student off-campus sign-in/sign-out policies.
  • Respond and monitor student behavior that complies with dormitory policies.
  • Be available to students as an advocate and academic mentor. Encourage good study, sleep and room cleanliness habits to promote student academic and personal success.
  • Proactively engage all students and encourage them to be active, social participants in our community. This includes getting students to participate in casual activities in the dorm (such as coming out of bedrooms to dinner, playing games, etc.) as well as larger off campus events.
  • Respond to fire drills and medical emergencies as needed - during both on-duty and on-call hours.
Responsible for handling dormitory/office administrative duties and responsibilities. This includes but not limited to:
  • Participate in required weekly, evening meetings with management.
  • Participate in required monthly, evening meetings with students.
  • Participate in required medical, safety and other Dorm Parent trainings.
  • Handle Dorm Parent administrative responsibilities such as nightly room check-ins, maintain and update room assignments, coordinate student arrivals/departures, etc.
  • Regularly take photos of our dormitory events and activities to send through WeChat to families and for use in marketing abroad.
  • Provide coverage for the dormitory and its residents when other Residential Life Staff take days off
  • Use company vehicles to drive students to school events, doctor's appointments, mall trips, etc. when needed.
  • Work collaboratively with Residential Life/Student Coordinators and Residential Staff (Kitchen, Facilities, Transportation) in meeting dormitory student needs, resolving student issues, planning/executing arrivals & departures of students from the dormitory, etc.
  • Work on assigned projects, as needed - other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree strongly preferred. Advanced degree (or in the process of getting an Advanced Degree) preferred. Graduate students, educators and healthcare providers welcomed and encouraged to apply.

Experience in education, caring for high school aged children, and/or prior experience as a Resident Advisor (RA) in a high school dormitory setting is desirable.

The successful candidate will possess a lively and outgoing demeanor, easily capable of forming connections with our students, involving them in all of our activities, and supporting their growth. Demonstrate excellent decision-making skills, strong leadership qualities, and possess sensitivity for the welfare of their international middle school and high school student residents that are minors.

Flexibility to provide coverage during certain company holidays (1.5X pay) - dormitory provides student housing 365 days per year.

Fluency in English is a required.

Resident Assistants/Dorm Parents must undergo and pass a national criminal and sex offender background and driving record check. Must have a valid CT Driver's License, 3+ years' driving experience and acceptable driving record. Must have work authorization to work in the U.S.

COMPENSATION: Part-Time, Hourly, Non-exempt, $16.35 per hour (for On-Duty hours) + FREE Room & Board/In-Dormitory Furnished Apartment Living Arrangements, Free Cafeteria Meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner), 401K (after 1 year of service, if eligible), Paid Sick Time (PTO), Premium pay for approved hours worked on a holiday.

JOB TYPE: Part-time, On-Duty & On-Call 3 evenings during the week (M-Th) and every other weekend (Friday evening until Monday morning).

WORK LOCATION: Onsite in the dormitory at 101 Marshall Lane, Derby, CT.
