SUPERVISION: Designated health services personnel
QUALIFICATIONS: Required - Baccalaureate degree in nursing
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the MN Board of Nursing
- Public Health Nurse Certificate in accordance with the MN Board of Nursing
- Licensed, or eligible for license, as a school nurse in accordance with the Minnesota Department of Education
- Current Red Cross or American Heart Association First Aid and CPR certification
Preferred - Experience in a school setting
POSITION SUMMARY: To strengthen and facilitate the educational process by providing and overseeing health related services, promoting health education and working to insure a safe and healthful environment by modifying health related barriers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: - Develops and maintains a system for providing first aid, emergency care, and dispensing of medications/treatment/procedures to students based on state and district policy
- Initiates, maintains and annually reviews student health records; collects yearly statistical information
- Provides health information/education and promotes wellness to students and parents to assist them in making decisions regarding students' health and health behaviors
- Trains, supervises and monitors designated personnel in their performance of delegated nursing functions
- Identifies health problems of school aged students through assessment, health histories, annual review of health records and screening programs
- Addresses current health problems, needs and concerns of students to their parents and appropriate school staff; develops individualized health plans (IHP) based on student health needs
- Participates as needed on the Student Assistance and Child Study Team; assists in the identification of students with disabilities; interprets and provides pertinent health information related to the student's disability for the individualized education plan (IEP)
- Collaborates effectively with students, colleagues, parents, staff and community agencies in the best interests of students health needs
- Upholds the ethical standards of the licensed school nurse/educational professional by adhering to federal, state and district policies
- Other duties as assigned
