POSITION DESCRIPTION
Library Media Coordinator (Elementary K-5)Reports to: Principal
Purpose: To lead, develop, and maintain a vibrant, student-centered school library media program that supports literacy development and instructional goals across all K-5 grade levels. This position promotes early information literacy, digital citizenship, technology integration, and a lifelong love of reading through developmentally appropriate programming.
Qualifications:Required: - Must hold or be eligible for a North Carolina Professional Educator's License as a School Library Media Coordinator (Area 076).
- Strong knowledge of elementary curriculum, literacy development, and instructional strategies for young learners.
- Proficiency with digital learning tools, library management systems, and early technology integration.
- Excellent collaboration, communication, and organizational skills.
- Commitment to inclusive, equitable library practices and student-centered learning.
Preferred: - Master's degree in Library Science, Instructional Technology, or a related field.
- Experience in an elementary school or similar educational setting.
- Familiarity with the North Carolina Digital Learning Standards and AASL National School Library Standards.
Essential Job Responsibilities: 1. Instructional Partner - Collaborate with classroom teachers to design and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction that integrates literacy, digital tools, and media skills.
- Teach students how to locate, evaluate, and use information and digital resources safely and effectively, with attention to early learners' developmental stages.
- Support classroom learning goals by promoting diverse literature and integrating reading across content areas.
2. Information and Technology Specialist - Lead the implementation of digital tools and instructional technologies that support differentiated instruction and foundational digital literacy.
- Curate and manage a diverse, inclusive, and engaging collection of print and digital materials tailored to elementary students.
- Stay current with educational technologies, children's literature, and best practices for elementary media programs.
3. Program Administrator - Create and implement a strategic vision for a developmentally appropriate K-5 library program aligned to state and district goals.
- Manage a welcoming, flexible, and student-centered library space that supports independent exploration, small-group learning, and class instruction.
- Oversee library operations including budgeting, scheduling, collection development, and inventory.
- Ensure compliance with copyright laws, digital use policies, and district procedures.
4. School Leader and Advocate - Participate as an instructional leader to promote student success and engagement.
- Advocate for the library media program by demonstrating its impact on early literacy, digital fluency, and student achievement.
- Foster strong partnerships with families and the community through reading events, book fairs, and digital citizenship initiatives.
- Model professional ethics, equity, and inclusive practices in support of all learners.
Minimum Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:Physical Requirements: Must be able to use various equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for students with special needs, etc. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Due to the time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for light work.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics (similar to or divergent from evident standards) of data, people, or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments, and/or directions from superiors.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas using spoken words; hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds by ear). One must be able to communicate via telephone.
Language Ability: This requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, and other documents, and to prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, instructional materials, and similar documents using a prescribed format.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret various technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Verbal Aptitude: The ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow oral and written instructions. Must communicate effectively and efficiently in various technical or professional languages, including medical, legal, and counseling terminology.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, add and subtract, multiply and divide, utilize decimals and percentages, and apply the principles of descriptive statistics, statistical inference, and statistical theory.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately when using office equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Requires handling various items, including office equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing effectively under stress and in emergency situations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Ability to constantly monitor students' safety and well-being, particularly when participating in an inclusive activity.
