LOCATION: Assigned SchoolREPORTS TO: Principal and School-Based Athletic Director
JOB GOALS: An employee in this position will exhibit high moral character and execute scholastic based athletic principals. The Volunteer Coach will ensure safety of athletes while participating; teach good sportsmanship; establish a welcoming environment for all; and positively influence the students they work with. This Coach will work with administration, faculty, and staff to work towards the district's goals regarding the whole child, academics, and athletics.
Level 3 Volunteer status requires an application with references, principal approval, and submission to Human Resources to vet and submit for formal board approval. Level 3 Volunteer status also requires a criminal records background check. Level 3 approval is at the discretion of District Administrators. A Level 3 Volunteer may volunteer in extended, long-term roles where they directly supervise students. Activities involving Level 3 Volunteers may include but are not limited to: tutors who directly supervise students, volunteer coaches, volunteer band staff/help, overnight trip chaperones, or mentors outside of the school day, or any other activity where a volunteer is directly and independently responsible for supervising students outside of the school day to include nights and weekends. Level 3 Volunteers may be required to complete courses the school system assigns. If Level 3 volunteer applicants need to begin performing duties prior to the Board's consideration of the application, the superintendent or designee has the discretion to authorize the volunteer to temporarily serve the district, contingent upon approval by the Board at its next meeting, If the Board ultimately denies the volunteer's application, the individual will cease Level 3 volunteer duties.
QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES: - Previous successful coaching experience preferred.
- Knowledgeable of all athletic policies approved by the Johnston County Schools' Board of Education.
- Knowledgeable of existing system, state, and conference regulations.
- Ability and willingness to organize and supervise athletic team members.
- Must possess superior knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
- Willingness to obtain a CDL to transport students on an approved activity bus to contests. Also, maintain certifications in order to do so, throughout tenure.
- Knowledgeable of the proper administrative line of command and the referral process for requests or grievances utilizing the proper chain of command.
- Knowledgeable of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Provide documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
- Maintain or acquire all necessary coaching prerequisites annually or as they expire listed by NCDPI, NCHSAA, & Johnston County Public Schools.
- Promote the sport within the school through holding interest meetings and encouraging multisport athletic opportunities.
- Maintain all medical emergency information needed for each athlete, while also understanding emergency protocols if they were to arise.
- Promote the sport outside the school by being involved in the community, getting involved in coaching organizations, and attending required meetings.
- Provide quality and approved communication to the public.
- Maintain good public relations with members of the community, Booster Club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
- Through the Athletic Director, prepare and release information to the public including schedules, tournaments, and results.
- Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught in assigned duty.
- Provides training, rules, and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant.
- Assist with monitoring student's athlete's grades and conduct.
- Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each athletic participant through regular attendance at games and practices.
- Follow policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
- Complete and submit proper paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries within 24 hours.
- Assist athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
- Collaborate with the Athletic Director to inform and determine discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary, and contacts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
- Assist the Head Coach in facilitating required pre-season meeting.
- Assist the Athletic Director in scheduling, providing transportation, and requirements for sports events.
- Collaborate with the Athletic Director and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes.
- Assist in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sports events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates athletic program with maintenance and school employees.
- Provide proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
- Accountable for all equipment and/or collection of fees for any lost or unreturned equipment. Arranges for issuing, storing, and reconditioning or equipment and submits annual inventory and current records.
- Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.
- Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices.
- Permit the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.
- Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on the general cleanliness of the facility. Is responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sports equipment.
- Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building.
- Instill in each player respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use.
- Perform such other duties as assigned by the Principal and or Superintendent of schools in keeping with Johnston County Board of Education Policy and North Carolina Administrative Code and Statutes.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: - Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently and/or in excess of 25 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to operate required equipment and motor vehicles, use measuring devices, and inspect work for accuracy, thoroughness, and adherence to work standards and instructions.
- Must possess the visual acuity to prepare data and statistics, work with figures, and records processes, operate a computer, and do extensive research and reading.
