Job Summary
The Legal Assistant provides high-level clerical support to attorneys by performing a variety secretarial duties and skilled tasks that may include preparing case information, tracking cases, supporting attorney's trial proceedings, and establishing and organizing files.
Duties/Responsibilities
Keeps cases organized by establishing and organizing files; monitoring calendars; meeting deadlines; documenting actions; inputting information into file database and case management software; confirming case status with attorney.
Helps develop cases by maintaining contact with people involved in the case; scheduling depositions; preparing and forwarding summonses and subpoenas; drafting complaints; preparing and filing discovery requests; preparing responses to opposing counsel; generating status reports.
Keeps clients informed by maintaining contact; communicating case progress.
Creates files to establish and organize case information.
Maintains case and correspondence files.
Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
Required Skills/Abilities
Detail-oriented and professional.
Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
Extremely proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
Basic understanding of office equipment.
Basic understanding of clerical procedures and systems such as recordkeeping and filing.
Flexible and adaptable in various situations and when interacting with many different personalities.
Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
Knowledge of, or ability to quickly acquire, familiarity with the roles and function of the assigned department, and any specifically applicable laws or guidelines.
Dependable with a respect to confidentiality and policies.
Education/Experience
High diploma required; Associates degree preferred.
One year of legal office experience required; two years preferred.
Physical Requirements
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Ability to stand, sit, walk, stoop, bend, kneel, grip and type.
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
