Job Summary
The Legal Administrative Assistant is responsible for providing legal assistance and guidance to clients in the long-term program while supporting the volunteer attorneys with the monthly legal clinic.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. The essential functions include the following:
• Provide clients with relevant court paperwork to deal with their specific legal issue, answer questions and assist with service.
• Obtain input from the volunteer lawyers in certain cases regarding case management and strategy.
• Assist clients with obtaining necessary supporting documentation for their legal issues.
• Research client criminal history for those interested in expungement.
• Research driving records for clients with issues regarding driving privileges.
• Assist clients in obtaining credit reports for bankruptcy considerations.
• Assist clients in obtaining related court documents for child support modifications, custody, and parenting time modifications.
• Research client eviction history for those interested in eviction expungement.
• Create and maintain resources such as binders of court documents, handbooks, contact lists, pamphlets, and other resources.
Required Skills & Experience (Minimum Qualifications):
• Associate's degree required; equivalent relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
• Previous experience with family and/or criminal justice law.
• Strong knowledge of legal terminology, court procedures, and relevant regulations.
• High level of professionalism with a demonstrated ability to maintain strict client confidentiality.
• Proficiency in administrative and legal writing, including drafting documents.
• Solid legal research skills, with the ability to interpret legal issues and explain them to non-legal audiences; familiarity with the Minnesota Courts website is a plus.
• Excellent time management and ability to prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• Outstanding communication and client service skills, with a client-centered approach.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
• Comfort and compassion in working with individuals facing life-controlling challenges, such as mental health issues and addiction.
• Commitment to MnTC's culture of honor and core values, including compassion, respect, integrity, servanthood, and trust.
• At least one year of freedom from problematic substances.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds at a time
Target Compensation (Negotiable based on Qualifications):
$30.00-35.00/hour
