JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for general lab duties; pipetting, media preparation, lab maintenance, data acquisition, molecular/microbiological techniques (PCR, gel electrophoresis, bacterial plating). Other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:

60% - Essential - Independently conduct and coordinate laboratory experiments, including but not limited to: anaerobic microbial isolation, microbiological assays, media preparation, molecular methods (DNA extraction, PCR, sequencing), participation in lab meetings, maintenance of an up-to-date lab notebook, entering data, prepare / analyze / present data (such as at lab meetings, conferences, or for manuscripts)

40% - Essential - Participate in general lab maintenance, including but not limited to: media preparation, maintenance and optimization of lab protocols, and other general lab tasks

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education - High School or Equivalent and work experience in a related health care setting or in a clinical or research laboratory setting; or 12 semester hours of academic training in biology and/or chemistry; or registration as a Certified Laboratory Assistant by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist or an equivalent registry; or successful completion of a formal program of instruction for laboratory assistants at a hospital or academic intuition.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or related field

Work Experience - Previous experience in a molecular lab setting. Proficiency in sterile technique, media preparation. Proficiency in molecular biology techniques. Evidence of organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work independent and as part of a team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

JOB KNOWLEDGE
Fundamental Job Knowledge - Fundamental working knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures and ability to apply in varied situations

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No Supervisory Duties - Not responsible for supervising employees.

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES
No Budget Responsibilities - No fiscal responsibility for the department's budget.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

20% - Sit (stationary position) for prolonged period
20% - Walk or move about
50% - Use hands or feet to operate or handle machinery, equipment, etc

This position requires performing lab work, documenting work, developing protocols, and maintaining equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

5% - Exposure to heat or cold
25% - Noise
5% - Vibration
10% - Mechanical hazards
50% - Chemical hazards
5% - Burn hazards
75% - Exposure to bio-hazards (i.e. blood, bodily fluids)

This position includes physical work in a lab that may include the use of cold rooms, the use of mechanical equipment, exposure to chemicals, exposure to animals, and exposure to biological agents. This position includes work with gut bacteria classified.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Standard Hours: 28

Anticipated duration of this temporary assignment: June 2025-Aug 2025

COMPENSATION INFORMATION

Anticipated Salary Range: $12.00 - $14.00/hour

Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL

Normal Operations

Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
