Job Description

SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE
The Juvenile Probation Officer II supervises the welfare and conduct of juveniles on probation. The incumbent may specialize in a specific area of juvenile justice. Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred. Must be 21 years of age at time of application. Applicants will undergo a law enforcement background investigation prior to being considered and for continued employment. On-call, overtime, shifts, weekend and holiday work are required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Coordinates and implements correctional and rehabilitative programs for juveniles ages 8 to 21 to include counseling, behavior monitoring and short-term out-of-home placements.
  • Conducts investigations of juveniles alleged to have committed crimes in order to make recommendations to the court.
  • Monitors compliance with rules of probation and court orders. Conducts visits with juveniles in the community. Administers drug screens, performs searches and seizes contraband. Makes arrests when juveniles violate probation.
  • Assesses the needs of juveniles for services. Provides advice and counsel. Locates programs and services to assist juveniles including tutoring, community service, employment and recreational programs. Identifies appropriate social service agencies and makes referrals.
  • Transports juveniles as needed.
  • Provides crisis intervention. Responds to situations of domestic violence, incidents involving substance abuse, fighting and other violations of the law.
  • Identifies and reports potential child abuse or neglect to the appropriate agency within 24 hours.
  • Makes decisions regarding the release or detention of juveniles.
  • Prepares written court reports. Maintains case files and chronological records. Requests petitions and probation violation reports.
  • Appears in court for detention, intake, evidentiary, review and disposition hearings. Testifies accurately and makes recommendations to the court.
  • Provides victim mediation. Collects restitution and fines.
  • Assists in training and supervising new staff. Assists other agencies with education and prevention of juvenile delinquency. Conducts educational programs.
  • Maintains knowledge of local, state, and federal programs, resources, and services available to youth and families.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the latest trends, techniques, and legal developments in juvenile justice.
  • Represents the department with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation.

Education and Experience

Education: Bachelor's degree in related field
Experience: Minimum 2 years of related work experience
Certifications: Must maintain a valid Nevada driver's license
Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Category II
CPR-First Aid Certified
Must maintain POST certification yearly as well as other approvals and designations as
required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA's)
An employee in this position must have the following knowledge, skills, abilities upon application:
Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of modern practices, procedures, and regulations for juvenile programs.
  • Knowledge of modern methods and techniques for coaching children in need of supervision.
  • Knowledge of interviewing techniques and investigative methods.
  • Working knowledge and correct usage of business English including spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and formats.
  • Working knowledge of caseload management, record keeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques.
  • Knowledge of the principles, functions and general practices of law enforcement agencies and the court system.
  • Working knowledge of personal computer hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases for the purposes of creating, editing and distributing information.
  • Thorough knowledge of Chapters 62 and 432B.220 of the Nevada Revised Statutes (NV Rev Stat 62 and NV Rev Stat 432B.220 (2017 , and all other applicable federal and state laws and regulations, county ordinances and regulations, department rules and regulations, and relevant court rulings.
Skills

  • Screening and evaluating juveniles for behavioral problems, alcohol and drug withdrawal, security risk and psychological needs.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
An employee in this position must meet the following physical requirements upon application:
  • Work is performed in an office setting.
  • Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand or walk.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 40 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Tools and equipment used include personal computer, printer, telephone, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, other associated office equipment, taser and firearms.
