Job Summary: Junior Cloud Engineer

The Minnesota Star Tribune is looking for a Junior Cloud Engineer to join our Cloud Engineering team that operates all of the cloud infrastructure and related services that support the Star Tribune's digital presence. As a Junior Cloud Engineer, under the guidance of other cloud engineers and our architect, you will support, design, and build our cloud infrastructure, develop and maintain automation tools and scripts, and collaboratively work with our software and test engineers to better support their needs within our services and infrastructure.

Our Cloud Engineering team is a multidisciplinary team within the Engineering department that collaborates with and supports other engineers and other departments, including with and within our world-class news organization, to operate our cloud infrastructure in a reliable, scalable, secure, and cost-effective way. To be successful in this role, it is key to have strong communication and collaboration skills, be curious, be driven to learn and grow, and be able to operate independently.

An ideal candidate has an existing technical background in software engineering, IT, or system operations, with a passion for collaborating with other technical staff to solve problems through automation and tooling.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Support, build, and design cloud infrastructure in AWS.
  • Develop and maintain internal tooling and services in our self-service developer platform.
  • Cross-team collaboration in topics such as logging, monitoring/alerting, deployments, and more.
  • Support our production services and internal services to ensure performance, uptime, costs, and security.
  • Be part of a weekly on-call rotation.
Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of experience in a technical discipline like software engineering, cloud engineering, IT, or system operations.
  • Prior experience writing scripts or tools with at least one programming language.
  • Knowledge of source control tools, like GitHub, Gitlab, Bitbucket, etc.
  • Experience with Linux and exposure to containers, like Docker.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of cloud infrastructure experience, AWS preferred.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and alerting services, such as Datadog or AWS CloudWatch.
  • Experience in writing scalable software in Python or TypeScript (Node.js, Next.js, etc).
  • Experience with Terraform, Ansible, Docker, GitHub Actions.
  • Knowledge of microservices, serverless infrastructure, and distributed systems architecture.
  • Knowledge of database management, such as MySQL or Mongo.

Salary/Wage Range:

$115,000 - $130,000 / year

Compensation for the role will depend on several factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies and experience and may fall outside of the range shown.
