Job Description:The Department of Information Technology Services (ITS) at SUNY Cobleskill seeks a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as an IT Security Technician. This position offers an opportunity to work in a collaborative and innovative environment, supporting the evolving technological needs of our campus community.
As part of the Information Security Unit within ITS, the IT Security Technician will assist in enhancing cybersecurity measures, supporting security operations, and providing general IT support to faculty, staff, and students. This role requires strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to improving IT security tools, processes, and best practices across campus.
Duties and Responsibilities:
General IT Support: - Provide high-quality customer service and technical support to campus users.
- Respond promptly and effectively to IT support requests, as outlined in ITS policies and procedures.
- Assist in supervising, training, and mentoring Service Desk student employees.
- Participate in ITS departmental planning groups and ongoing projects.
- Provide scheduled support outside normal business hours, including occasional evenings, holidays, or weekends, as needed.
Security & Compliance: - Assist in monitoring and analyzing security data sources to detect vulnerabilities and potential security incidents.
- Support vulnerability scanning, penetration testing, and firewall operations.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of IT security documentation, procedures, and policies.
- Help facilitate IT security awareness training for the campus community.
- Monitor and troubleshoot email security issues, including phishing detection and spam filtering.
Ticketing System Management: - Utilize the ITS ticketing system (TeamDynamix/TDX) to track, document, and resolve IT security and technical support requests.
- Maintain awareness of campus-wide IT issues and ensure timely responses in alignment with ITS prioritization guidelines.
Classroom & AV Support: - Provide initial troubleshooting and rapid resolution for classroom AV equipment malfunctions during active class sessions.
- Assist in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of specialized AV equipment.
- Support hardware and software configurations for classrooms and computer labs.
Equipment Deployment & Relocation: - Assist with the setup, relocation, and configuration of IT equipment, including computers, monitors, printers, and telephones.
- Work with facilities staff and end-users to ensure smooth equipment moves.
Hardware & Software Support: - Troubleshoot hardware-related issues and coordinate repairs with manufacturers or perform in-house repairs as needed.
- Install, configure, and support software applications, including Microsoft Office 365, Adobe products, and other campus-supported programs.
- Assist with Windows and macOS system administration, including domain joins and user account management.
Network Support: - Provide initial troubleshooting for network connectivity issues.
- Assist with basic CAT6 network wiring, including terminations and patch panel connections.
- Troubleshoot Wi-Fi connectivity issues and assist users with authentication and access problems.
- Support network and domain administrators with deploying and troubleshooting new networking equipment as needed.
Requirements:Minimum Qualifications - Bachelor's degree at the time of hire.
- Basic knowledge of IT security principles and best practices.
- Demonstrated troubleshooting skills in IT hardware, software, and networking.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to support diverse users.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
Preferred QualificationsIn addition to the aforementioned minimum qualifications, it is preferred the candidate also have:
- Two years of professional IT experience, preferably in a support or security role.
- Relevant IT security certifications, such as CompTIA Security+ or Microsoft SC-900.
- Experience working in a customer service-focused IT environment.
- Prior experience in IT security operations and technical support.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, Windows/macOS support, and Active Directory administration.
- Familiarity with IT service management tools such as TeamDynamix, ServiceNow, or similar ticketing systems.
- Experience working in a higher education setting.
- Ability to work with and support diverse populations.
Additional Information: - This is an SL-2 position with a salary range of $47,500 - $50,000.
