MAJOR FUNCTIONS

This position will render "hands on" support to the After School Program Director at the Program Director's discretion. The Counselor will be in constant contact with after school program participants and will administer the specifics of the program as instructed by the Program Director. This position requires completion of related duties and assignments as required to ensure the programs goals and objectives are met and properly documented. Duties are performed at the general direction of the departmental section as designated by the Program Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Assist the Program Director in maintaining accurate records of expenditures.
  • Maintain inventory and control of equipment and supplies.
  • Evaluate and supervise volunteer youth workers.
  • Attend all staff and community meetings as directed by the Program Director.
  • Participate in planned activities both off and on-site, as well as planned field trips.
  • Prepare and maintain the facility in which activities are conducted, ensuring a safe and clean environment and provision of necessary food and supplies.
  • Participate with residents in leisure time activities.
  • Work directly with the children's parents and provide necessary training in parenting, domestic skills and job skills.
  • Encourage parental involvement and participation in all activities.
  • Determine if the children have appropriate hygiene, school supplies and clothing.
  • Other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook).
  • Ability to learn and utilize third-party software in an independent and efficient manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional, cooperative, team focused and effective relationships with team members, other agencies, other departments, leaders and the general public.

  • Excellent ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use critical thinking skills to arrive at solutions and suggest improvements to processes.
  • Excellent project and time management skills with ability to prioritize work and resources.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment while following processes and procedures as determined.

  • Ability to multi-task and maintain strong level of organization with evolving and changing priorities.

  • Basic knowledge of the community and the citizens served by the After School Assistance Program.
  • Ability to plan, assign, direct and/or supervise certain aspects of the program.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and cultural diversities.
  • Ability to show compassion, kindness and concern for children and to be firm when necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in a field directly related to children
  • Valid driver license.
  • Pass criminal and Child Abuse Registry background investigation

A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
