As the first dedicated IP legal hire, you will work closely with internal teams and external counsel to protect our innovations, mitigate IP risk, and align our patent strategy with R&D and business goals. You'll advise across the full IP lifecycle-from invention disclosure to prosecution, competitive analysis, and enforcement.
You'll report directly to the COO and collaborate with leaders across engineering, design, product, and operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, file, and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications.
- Conduct invention harvesting sessions and identify patentable innovations.
- Advise on freedom-to-operate, infringement risk, and patentability assessments.
- Manage third-party IP issues, including licensing requests and enforcement matters.
- Develop internal IP policies, training programs, and workflows.
- Maintain and manage Aborder's patent portfolio and docketing operations.
- Monitor IP law developments and proactively advise the business.
- Collaborate with outside counsel on complex prosecution or litigation matters.
- Support contract negotiations involving IP clauses (NDAs, licenses, JVs, etc.).
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school.
- Member in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar (Texas preferred).
- USPTO Registration required.
- 4+ years of experience in patent law (law firm or in-house), preferably in consumer products.
- Technical degree in engineering or a related field strongly preferred.
- Experience drafting and prosecuting utility patents.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. patent law and familiarity with international IP practices.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Self-starter capable of independently driving IP initiatives in a fast-paced environment.
Why Join Us?
- Be the first patent attorney at a fast-scaling product company
- High-impact role with executive visibility
- Creative, entrepreneurial culture with a strong focus on innovation
- Competitive compensation and benefits
