Job Description Summary:

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Lab Operations and Dean of Schmid College, this position will work with faculty, PIs, instructors, and laboratory technicians to maintain, update, and oversee the use of major laboratory instrumentation for Schmid College. This Individual will develop programs for the upkeep and training for laboratory instrumentation. Perform skilled technical work related to preparing and maintaining materials, supplies, and equipment for instructional science laboratories. Maintains instruments, including basic maintenance and coordination of vendors needed for serious repairs.

Responsibilities:

  • Instructional and Research Instrumentation Maintenance and Use Management
  • Perform basic maintenance on instructional instrumentation and coordinate service for major repairs and updates to instruments when needed. Perform routine maintenance on microscopes as required to keep them running at optimal performance and use.
  • Develop a maintenance program for all major teaching and research instrumentation in the college and ensure that this program is communicated to and followed by users.
  • Develop and maintain all instrumentation scheduling and training of faculty, staff, and students in the proper use of new and existing instruments using iLab, Agilent Calendar Reservation System.
  • Equipment and instrument training as requested.
  • Train faculty, staff, and students on use of advanced microscopes (SEM, AFM, Confocal, Fluorescence) housed in the Keck Center.
  • Assist faculty in design and execution of image acquisition for research purposes.
  • Oversee and assist faculty and technical staff in the inquiry regarding, selection of, and purchase of new instrumentation for instructional and research laboratories.
  • Research and submit orders using PeopleSoft for supplies that will be needed to keep instruments running properly and effectively and that will be used with instruments in instructional and research labs.
  • Oversee the installation of and coordinate initial training with faculty and staff for newly acquired instrumentation and equipment.
  • Act as the main point of contact for the college for instrument companies and their representatives regarding sales, instrument demonstrations, service contract renewal and
  • service visits.
  • Coordinate with Research and Facilities Manager regarding physical needs for laboratory instrumentation such as utilities and space repurposing.
  • Hire and train student workers or additional staff as growth and funds permit to assist in basic maintenance and image acquisition.
  • NMR maintenance: Fill with liquid Nitrogen every 7-10 days. Liquid Helium every 5-7 months.
  • Instructional and Research Support and Planning
  • Develop advanced microscopy modules/experiments that can be incorporated into appropriate lab courses.
  • Develop and implement a sustainable microscopy use and education program accessible to all Chapman students and faculty.
  • Work with laboratory, course instructors and technical staff in planning, updating, and developing new and existing laboratory experiments where instrumentation is used
  • Assist faculty in troubleshooting and performing basic maintenance of research instrumentation and coordination of service visits.
  • Work with and assist faculty regarding method development for research instrumentation and advanced microscopy.
  • Engages with the Deans of Schmid to plan future growth and direction of microscopy facilities and instrumentation needs.
  • Outside User and Contract Work Support
  • Assist in working with the office of research to ensure that the use of instruments by outside users meets regulatory requirements.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, biology, or closely related discipline.
  • Coursework involving theory behind and use of common instrumentation in physics, chemistry, biochemistry, and/or biology.
  • Understanding of how instrumentation is used in instructional undergraduate science laboratories.
  • Ability to research, understand and apply modern trends in instrumentation use for undergraduate science education and communicate findings to appropriate faculty.
  • Familiarity regarding instrument operation for NMR, GC, MS, FTIR, HPLC, atomic absorption, and Fluorescence spectroscopy with relevant knowledge in instrumentation, installation and maintenance.
  • 2 years' experience in either an academic or industrial setting performing maintenance, upkeep, and basic repair for some or all of the instruments previously listed.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with multiple faculty and technical staff on different projects to meet multiple deadlines regarding instrument maintenance, repair, and instruction.
  • Ability and desire to attend workshops and training regarding instrument operation, maintenance, repair, and new instrumentation methods.
  • Highly organized and able to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in written form

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's or PHD in physics, chemistry, biology, or closely related discipline.
