The Instructor of English and Fine Arts provides effective instruction in the areas of Development English courses, Freshman English, Technical English, Literature, and other related courses. Experience working with remediation, grant writing, and technical writing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare and deliver engaging lectures to undergraduate students in the areas of English , Writing, and communication courses.
  • Develop a successful remediation program in English and Writing.
  • Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction.
  • Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
  • Maintain course/student records such as student grades, attendance, and training activity details in accordance with FERPA regulations and submit records by established deadlines.
  • Help students identify and achieve their goals through participating in the college's advising process, as well as working directly in recruitment and retention of students.
  • Help coordinate with concurrent partners on English curriculum alignment.
  • Work with both General Education transfer courses and technical program requirements.
  • Participates in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to keep abreast of developments in the field of study and integrate relevant information into training programs.
  • Maintains accessibility to students via email, phone, or personal conferences. Maintains course/student records such as student grades, attendance, and training activity details in accordance with FERPA regulations and submit records by established deadlines.
  • Keeps a flexible weekly schedule that best facilitates student learning and access.
  • Remains current in academic or program discipline, including maintaining licensure, certification, or continuing education requirements where appropriate. Receives training or stay current in advances within the field of study that promote student learning.
  • Participates in college professional development activities.
  • Helps students identify and achieve their educational goals through participating in the college's advising process, as well as providing incidental academic advice to students in classes.
  • Posts and keeps office hours to facilitate interaction with students, the college community, and the public.
  • Serves on standing ad hoc committees, advisory boards, hiring committees, faculty senate, or as a student organization advisor. Attends local, regional, and state meetings where required or necessary for the discipline.
  • Mentor and assists in orienting new faculty, either formally or informally where appropriate or required by department or division.
  • Attends commencement or other ceremonies appropriate to the faculty member's discipline or program. Attends department, divisional, and college-wide meetings where appropriate or as required by the supervisor. Performs other academically-related duties as assigned by instructor's supervisor.
  • Performs certain administrative or service duties in support of the English and Fine Arts program.
  • Performs any other related duties as required or assigned.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • When an individual accepts a teaching appointment at the college, he or she also accepts responsibilities and obligations as a professional educator. Under the supervision of the Dean, the faculty has as their chief duty the instruction of assigned classes. These duties take precedence over all others. In addition to their teaching responsibilities, faculty should assume responsibility for professional development, service to the college, and other duties as assigned by their supervisors. They are obligated to abide by and support College policies. Faculty must be committed to the learning college philosophy as well as the goals and objectives of the college.
  • Each semester's instructional load will be assigned by the faculty member's supervisor, which will be determined by the nature of the position, the needs of the department, and workload guidelines established by college policy. Evening, weekend, as well as on-line instruction may be required as well as travel between campuses (Newport, Jonesboro, or Marked Tree).
  • Development of and participation in special college projects, development of new instructional techniques, development of an assessment plan in the discipline, student advising, and participation in other college and community service activities consistent with the mission of the college.

QUALIFICATIONS

Potential candidates should be able to instruct courses in English appropriate to the two-year college level. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum requirements include a Master's Degree with 18 semester credit hours in the major area of concentration (English) and a Doctorate is preferred. Experience in the use of instructional technology and on-line coursework as well as previous educational teaching experience is desirable.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FUNDS, PROPERTY and EQUIPMENT

Shares responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of the lab equipment and facilities.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Strong communication skills are required. Ability to write reports, correspondence, and policy/procedure manuals so others will understand; Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, faculty, administration or the general public. The ability to speak clearly so others can understand your instruction.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.

CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formats.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Under general direction, working from policies and general directives. Rarely refers specific cases to supervisor unless clarification or interpretation of the organization's policy is required.

DECISION MAKING

Performs work operations which permit frequent opportunity for decision-making of minor importance, either of which would affect the work operations of small organizational component and the organization's clientele.

MENTAL DEMAND

Operations require close and continuous attention for control of operations. Operations requiring intermittent direct thinking to determine or select the most applicable way of handling situations regarding the organization's administration and operations; also to determine or select material and equipment where highly variable sequences are involved.

ANALYTICAL ABILITY / PROBLEM SOLVING

Moderately structured. Fairly broad activities using moderately structured procedures with only generally guided supervision. Interpolation of learned things in somewhat varied situations.
