Job Overview

A prominent U.S.-based law firm is seeking a highly experienced Innovation Attorney - AI to champion the integration and advancement of artificial intelligence technologies in the delivery of legal services. This position plays a critical role in supporting firm-wide innovation, with a strong focus on generative AI, legal tech adoption, and process improvement. The role will work closely with innovation leadership and cross-functional teams to enhance legal practice capabilities.

Duties
  • Lead firm-wide projects for the adoption and integration of AI in legal workflows

  • Collaborate with practice groups and innovation teams to promote technology use

  • Provide one-on-one AI consulting support for attorneys, including workflow ideation and troubleshooting

  • Design and deliver training sessions, workshops, and design-thinking labs on AI and legal tech

  • Identify and develop practice-specific AI use cases, including prompt and example libraries

  • Facilitate innovation workshops across legal departments and business units

  • Support the firm's AI & Tech Ambassador program, providing mentorship and structure

  • Monitor and evaluate usage of internal AI tools and identify optimization opportunities

  • Interface with legal tech vendors for feature development and tool assessments

  • Lead pilots, onboarding, and adoption of emerging legal technologies

  • Consult with clients on AI capabilities and applications in legal service delivery

  • Create case studies and develop internal portals and knowledge bases related to legal innovation

Requirements
  • At least 8 years of experience practicing law in a large law firm

  • Demonstrated expertise in AI, including generative AI and large language models

  • Significant experience using and implementing legal technology tools

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to simplify technical topics

  • Proven project management skills and experience leading multidisciplinary teams

  • Strong analytical and organizational capabilities

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Collaborative, team-oriented attitude with a problem-solving mindset

  • Availability to travel as needed

Education
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited institution

  • Admission in good standing to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction

Certifications
  • Legal technology or innovation certifications (optional but beneficial)

Skills
  • In-depth knowledge of generative AI tools and machine learning applications in legal practice

  • Design thinking and legal service design

  • Strong facilitation, training, and instructional design capabilities

  • Strategic thinking and business acumen in law firm operations

  • Data interpretation and benchmarking in legal tech usage

Salaries are in line with other top Bay Area firms, and the firm provides a sizable bonus for all lawyers who bill at least 1,950 hours, with additional money based on three separate billable-hour levels above 1,950.
