Position Summary: The Industrial Engineer will analyze data and implement plans for production process optimization. Monitor the home-building production processes to seek new ways to maximize process efficiencies, eliminate waste and reduce employee fatigue and comply to all respective codes and company policies. Improve processes based on extensive time study data collection and analysis as well as aid automation projects, both as a team member and a team leader and interact with all stakeholders for a sustainable implementation. Leverage a combination of experience in mechanical design, process improvement and monitoring, quality control, and develop management systems to resolve production problem or minimize costs by performing engineering assignments over a wide range of projects of varying complexity. Apply standard engineering techniques to assigned tasks and ensure that specific goals are met in terms of process efficiency.


Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Work with the leadership team to analyze and improve organizational processes and work to optimize quality, productivity and efficiency in each department.
  • Review current home-manufacturing processes to make recommendations to improve production efficiencies by maximizing home production while balancing employee-workload for a better work-life balance of team members involved.
  • Perform Mixed Model Assembly Line Balancing by applying continuous improvement, LEAN, and SIX SIGMA concepts to reduce the downtime and other non-value-added time of all workstations at Clayton Albuquerque.
  • Conduct time study analyses, and statistical work sampling to analyze the production process as well as employee performance using Tableau and custom-built data visualization applications.
  • Develop software applications to improve data-analysis and reporting used by senior management for strategic operational planning, such as handling material shortages by optimizing regional consumptions.
  • Develop auditing systems to ensure continuity of established processes, coach and develop leadership to champion these O.E. audits
  • Create a strategic long-term SKA development program for all team members throughout the organization to take on greater responsibilities and to ensure the company has backup/cross functionality across current staff.
  • Responsible for determining needs within the company and connect groups to work together to solve problems as they arise.
  • Oversee Engineering program & provide leadership to the Engineering team
  • Oversee the Quality program and provide leadership to the QA team, PIC and Customer Advocates
  • Information Systems - ensure the facility is in conformity with the Clayton Home Office IT strategy. Work with the Home Office IT team to ensure the business has robust and reliable IT systems and continuously capitalizes on technology maximize effectiveness and business efficiency.
  • Maintain process improvement tracking sheet for real-time progress measurement and ROI tracking.
  • Conduct feasibility studies using simulation software on proposed changes to the manufacturing processes and develop cost estimates using concepts of Engineering Economics. The proposed changes can include implementing new construction materials, and production equipment.
  • Develop VBA (programming language) to program dashboards to visualize and improve Key Performance Indicators that monitor the manufacturing process.
  • Lead a cross-functional team (IT, Facilities & Operations personnel) to develop quality assurance & defect-tracking initiatives (Clayton Qbuilt & Drive to Defect Free programs). These initiatives help home-manufacturing facilities produce defect-free homes by providing real-time defect data.
  • Design equipment, fixtures, and jigs using AutoCAD software to improve assembly line efficiencies, product quality & ergonomics such as marking & cutting plumbing as well as electrical wire holes in the floor by using custom-designed reusable templates.
  • Analyze material flow and material storage plans for the plant using lean tools to set up optimal locations and product flow in the plant.
  • Develop standardized operating procedures and develop system with the production leadership to properly deploy these to the production team members.
  • Lead the cultural change to become more efficient by looking at process improvements and waste elimination in the shop.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a regionally accredited college or university
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
  • Advanced computer knowledge with AutoCAD, MS Office applications, Tableau, and other computer tools related to process improvement & data visualization.
  • Experience with PLC/PAC and/or other computer programming languages & simulation software that aids in automation.
  • Strong continuous improvement mentality and application of LEAN or SIX SIGMA manufacturing techniques/tools.
  • Experience in applying Engineering Economic concepts to reduce operational costs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software and Word processing software, other Microsoft Suite products.
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills and a willingness to take on new challenges.
  • Knowledge of project management
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and techniques related to the manufactured housing industry.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational planning, teamwork, analytical reasoning, and adaptability. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environments.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
  • Strong operational and engineering background required.
  • Experience with process development and controlled documentation.
  • Demonstrated positive leadership influence with others.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is required.

Physical Demands:


  • Must be able to consistently operate a computer and other office productivity machinery such as telephone, calculator, copy machine, computer printer, etc.
  • Must be able to communicate with others via phone, email, and in person. Must be able to exchange accurate information with others.
  • Works in a factory setting, in extreme cold and hot temperatures.
  • Walks for extended periods of time.

Travel Requirements:

Minimal travel will be required to occasionally travel to other locations for training and development and to participate on home office conferences and events.
