About the Role
This position is ideal for a seasoned HR and Payroll professional who is ready to take full ownership of the human resources function within a small/midsize mission-driven organization. This is a standalone role with the autonomy to assess, recommend, and implement HR strategies, policies, and practices that align with organizational goals. The role also includes payroll oversight in collaboration with finance.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the organization's sole HR leader, owning all HR-related functions including compliance, employee relations, performance management, and benefits administration
- Provide strategic guidance and support to leadership on HR policies, organizational culture, and employee engagement
- Oversee payroll processing in coordination with the finance team
- Support recruitment, onboarding, training, and offboarding processes
- Maintain and recommend updates to the employee handbook and HR procedures
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws
- Lead or support internal investigations, handle sensitive personnel matters confidentially and professionally
- Coordinate annual performance reviews and staff development initiatives
- Manage benefits administration, open enrollment, and vendor relationships
Ideal Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required (BA/BS)
- 3+ years of HR generalist experience
- Prior exposure to payroll processing and HRIS systems
- Comfortable functioning independently in a hands-on, strategic role
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; excellent judgment
- Previous experience in a nonprofit environment is a plus
