The Federal Public Defender's Office in the Central District of California is accepting applications for a full-time Human Resources Administrative Assistant to join our Operations & Policy Unit. This role supports over 230 employees across our Los Angeles, Santa Ana, and Riverside offices, with the selected candidate based in Los Angeles. Our office is committed to the pursuit of justice by advocating for the constitutional rights and inherent dignity of individuals accused or convicted of crimes, including those sentenced to death, who cannot afford legal representation.
Job Duties The Human Resources Administrative Assistant will assist with various personnel-related functions, including but not limited to:
- Coordinating employee onboarding and offboarding.
- Timely processing a high volume of personnel actions in the Judiciary's Human Resources Management Information System.
- Preparing for open season and managing benefits communication.
- Creating reports and maintaining personnel records.
- Handling all aspects of workers compensation claims, reasonable accommodation requests, and retirement counseling.
- Assisting in managing conflicts and assisted resolutions.
- Point of Contact for employee personnel information flow with payroll, benefits division, and outside agencies.
- Supporting recruiting and retention processes.
- Drafting personnel policies and procedures and explaining them to new and existing employees.
- Providing orientations and office trainings on various Judiciary and in-house policies and procedures to staff and supervisors.
- Collaborating on community initiatives.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements - Education: A bachelor's degree from a regionally or nationally accredited school. Extensive relevant experience may substitute for a degree. PHR certification or SHRM Certification preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of four years of full-time experience in human resources, management, or a related field.
- Skills:
- Timely responses to inquiries.
- Must be available to work weekends, during audits, employee and office emergencies, and outside business hours depending on operational needs of the office.
- High level of discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Exercise reasonable care to promote a respectful workplace.
- Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and conflict management skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate with teams effectively.
- Regular travel between all three office locations.
- Commitment to continuing education and training.
