Job Title: Histotechnician
Location: San Diego, California, United States
Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday, 12:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Pay Range: $32 - $36 per hour
Position Summary: The Histotechnician is responsible for the receipt, processing, and preparation of patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist. Core duties include logging, batching, cutting, mounting, and staining of specimens. The role also supports operations through personnel training, workflow optimization, quality assurance coordination, regulatory compliance, and interdepartmental collaboration.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine and specialized histology procedures under general direction with high precision and accuracy
- Troubleshoot and resolve histology-related issues
- Execute microtomy, tissue grossing, tissue processing, and H&E staining with attention to quality
- Prepare microscopic slides for research and diagnostic purposes, including paraffin tissue processing
- Conduct quality control and quality assurance procedures
- Organize slides and maintain all necessary reagents per specifications
- Accession specimens and perform manual and computerized data entry
- Follow established SOPs to prepare slides for pathologist evaluation
- Conduct routine maintenance on laboratory equipment, including cleaning and minor troubleshooting
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Associate's degree in a science-related field (preferred)
- HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certification (required)
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a high-complexity clinical laboratory, preferably in molecular diagnostics
- Proficiency in producing high-quality tissue sections from various specimen types
- Compliance with continuing education requirements from the California Department of Health Services
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
- Supervisory experience is a plus
- Familiarity with major histology equipment brands is a plus
Compensation & Additional Information:
Final salary is based on several factors, including experience, education, and job relevance. In addition to base pay, the role may include bonuses, incentives, and stock options, depending on eligibility.
