POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title: Principal - High School

Reports To: Division Superintendent

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary: To provide leadership for the school staff in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive educational program and to administer the program in accordance with School Board policies and administrative regulations

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Develops and evaluates educational programs to ensure compliance with state and and local School Board standards.

2. Provides for the continuing development and implementation of an effective instructional program through classroom supervision and instructional leadership.

3. Plans and monitors the school's budget to effectively run the school's instructional programs.

4. Advises the Director of Human Resources of staff needs and participates in the recruitment, employment, assignment, promotion, transfer, non-renewal and dismissal of licensed and classified personnel.

5. Works with school staff and community to maintain a safe environment and an atmosphere conducive to learning

6. Maintains proper utilization and care of buildings and grounds.

7. Establishes and maintains relationships with colleges, community organizations, and other schools to coordinate educational services.

8. Establishes and maintains an open line of communication with parents, students, staff, the community, and other stakeholders.

9. Devises and administers a school budget, utilizing all available funds, which is consistent with division, instructional, and administrative goals and supervises
the maintenance of accurate bookkeeping and accounting of school funds.

10. Delegates authority to the appropriate personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.

11. Performs other duties as may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises and evaluates the performance of each member of the school staff and establish individual programs for improvement consistent with the division's staff development program.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

1. Valid Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision
2. Have a minimum of five years experience of successful teaching and administrative experience at the middle or secondary school level
3. Demonstrates strong instructional leadership with knowledge of innovative programs and best practices
4. Knowledge of budget process, experience with data-drive decision making and use of technology

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of elementary and special education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching and administration; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, parent, and community members.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Valid Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasional lifting of equipment and/or materials weighing up to approximately 40 pounds may be required. Regular contact with staff members, students, parents, and community members is required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Twelve-month employment. Salary to be determined by the current administrative salary schedule.

EVALUATION

Performance of the position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Prince Edward County School Board's policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
