Job Description

The Head Men's Basketball Coach is responsible for leading all aspects of the men's basketball program at McMurry University. This includes recruitment, coaching, player development, and administrative responsibilities. The coach is expected to uphold the mission of McMurry University and ensure compliance with all university, American Southwest Conference, and NCAA Division III policies and guidelines.

Essential Duties Summary

Major Responsibilities:

1. Recruiting:
  • Identify and recruit prospective student-athletes who meet McMurry University's academic and athletic standards.
  • Effectively communicate with prospective student athletes and their families about the program and university opportunities.
  • Coordinate recruitment efforts with McMurry's Office of Admissions.
2. Coaching & Player Development:
  • Plan and implement effective practice sessions focused on skill development, teamwork, and game strategies.
  • Foster a positive and competitive team environment that emphasizes character, academic success, and athletic achievement.
  • Provide mentorship and leadership to student-athletes, promoting personal growth and well-being.
3. Program Administration:
  • Ensure program compliance with all university, conference, and NCAA III regulations.
  • Develop and manage the basketball program budget in coordination with the Athletics Department.
  • Coordinate team travel logistics, including scheduling, transportation, and accommodations.
  • Oversee the maintenance and inventory of equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
  • Communicate effectively within the Athletics Department and with the broader university community.
4. Supervision & Staff Development:
  • Identify, hire, train, and evaluate assistant coaches and volunteer staff.
  • Ensure adherence of assistant coaches and volunteers to all university, conference, and NCAA guidelines.
5. Community & Alumni Engagement:
  • Represent McMurry University positively in the community and develop relationships with alumni and supporters.
  • Participate in fundraising initiatives and community outreach programs.
6. Other Duties:

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Two to three years of coaching experience at the college level, or significant experience coaching at the high school or club level.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit and retain student-athletes in a competitive academic environment.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals within the university and community.
  • Commitment to the academic and personal development of student-athletes.
Minimum Required Education
Bachelor's degree

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Three to five years of college-level coaching experience.
  • Experience competing or coaching at the NCAA Division III level.
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division III recruiting regulations.
