Job Summary:
The Head Cook is responsible for all aspects of food production in assigned building, keeping within sanitation, food cost, nutrition, and scheduling guidelines. The Head Cook is responsible for overseeing all kitchen staff with food preparation, planning, and maintenance of a clean and sanitary environment.
Essential Duties (May include, but not limited to): - Plans and directs the preparation and serving of all food for the child nutrition program.
- Ensures the security of food and supplies, including revenue.
- Supervises and participates in the preparation and serving of food.
- Directs and monitors the daily tasks of child nutrition staff members.
- Oversees and participates in the cleaning of the kitchen and related areas.
- Plans daily tasks, arranges for subs when required within department guidelines.
- Directs sanitation procedures and ensures food safety.
- Ensures the kitchen, cooking, mixing and serving utensils, and employees are clean and sanitary.
- Ensures all equipment in the kitchen area is in safe, working condition and notifies the Child Nutrition Manager when repairs are needed.
- Maintains all records of food and supplies received and used.
- Maintains accurate production records conforming to government and department standards and guidelines.
- Trains new staff members.
- Checks in deliveries and verifies supplier invoices.
- Supervises and directs the storage of supplies according to food safety guidelines.
- Ensures meal service adheres to published menus and government regulations.
- Minimizes food waste.
- Proactively identifies issues, resolutions and process improvement.
- Seeks direction from the Child Nutrition Manager when necessary.
- Forecasts daily servings and orders needed supplies through the Child Nutrition Manager.
- Counts money, processes checks, makes change and completes related reports in a timely and accurate manner.
- Serves students using accurate measuring and portioning techniques.

Qualifications: Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Recognized Food Safety Manager Certification such as "ServSafe" or equivalent according to the Genesee County Health Department desired.
Experience: Experience with quantity food preparation and service preferred.
Skills/Other: Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at the same time. Experience and ability to successful supervise, lead, and coach staff. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Demonstrate excellent verbal, written, electronic and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to effectively present information to a diverse audience. Ability to comprehend and complete basic business math including measurements. Ability to perform these operations using units of US currency and weight measurement, volume and distance. Ability to calculate per serving ingredient quantities based on standardized recipes. Ability to forecast servings based on historical data and current trends. Ability to problem solve in ambiguous situations. Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers and students. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to lead and set an example for staff members. Ability to problem solve and improvise under adverse conditions, such as equipment failure. Demonstrate physical stamina necessary for lifting and moving heavy equipment and materials, repetitive stooping, squatting, bending, lifting, walking, kneeling and reaching while maintaining personal balance and stability. Demonstrate ability to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and other staff. Maintain and ensure safe and well-being work environment for all staff. Ability to utilize district technology and work to maintain proficiency, as required skill sets change with technology and/or the needs of the district. Punctuality and good attendance are requirements for the position. Works successfully as a member of the team. Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and professionalism at all times. Ability work a flexible day, work week, and work year. Ability to exercise good judgment and make decisions in accordance with board policies and established administrative guidelines.

Salary Schedule: Limited-Duration Grant-Funded Position, Part-Time, 4.5-7.5 hours per day. Salary commensurate with education and experience. $15.00/hour
