Position Summary
Whitworth University is seeking an inspiring and strategic leader to serve as Head Softball Coach, guiding all aspects of a competitive NCAA Division III program committed to excellence, character development, and student-athlete flourishing. The Head Coach leads with vision, managing recruiting, training, game strategy, and program administration, while developing student-athletes: athletically, academically, and personally. Key responsibilities include cultivating a high-performance team culture, mentoring student-athletes, managing budgets and fundraising, overseeing field operations, and ensuring compliance with NCAA and institutional standards.

Beyond the field, the coach will actively engage in Whitworth's vibrant campus community by participating in staff retreats, university committees, and student mentoring. This position also offers growth potential through additional teaching or administrative responsibilities aligned with the candidate's skills and interests.

Core Responsibilities
Program Leadership and Coaching 50%
  • Design and lead a comprehensive training program that prepares student-athletes to compete at a high level and grow as individuals.
  • Oversee all aspects of team performance, including game strategy, practice planning, and player development.
  • Create a team culture that prioritizes academic success, personal growth, and well-being.
  • Actively mentor student-athletes, modeling leadership and integrity on and off the field.
  • Lead a strategic and mission-aligned recruiting process to attract and retain student-athletes who reflect Whitworth's values.
  • Manage team scheduling, travel planning, and logistics.
  • Ensure full compliance with NCAA, Northwest Conference, and university policies.
  • Represent Whitworth in the conference, the NCAA, and the broader softball community.
Budget and Operations Management 10%
  • Develop and oversee the program budget in alignment with university guidelines.
  • Procure and maintain equipment and uniforms for the softball team.
  • Hire, supervise, and support assistant coaches and student staff, building a collaborative and professional environment.
  • Provide leadership and oversight to assistant coaches and student workers.
Fundraising and External Engagement 15%
  • Plan and lead fundraising initiatives to support program needs and enhance the student-athlete experience.
  • Cultivate relationships with alumni, parents, and community supporters.
Facility Oversight 15%
  • Coordinate with Facilities Services to maintain and enhance Diana Marks Field.
  • Oversee the day-to-day care, preparation, and use of the playing surface and related facilities.
University Engagement and Additional Opportunities 10%
  • Participate in campus-wide initiatives, including student mentoring, staff retreats, and committee service.
  • Depending on the candidate's background, additional responsibilities such as teaching or administrative duties may be assigned.
Qualifications and Core Competencies
  • Master's degree. A bachelor's degree and exceptional coaching experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • One to three years of demonstrated successful coaching experience. College or university-level experience preferred.
  • A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff, faculty, alumni, fans, parents, and students.
  • A commitment to the educational mission of Whitworth University as a Christian liberal arts university.

Full-time (1.0 FTE) 12 months 40 hours per week
