Job Summary
The Vernon Gators Swim Team (VGST) is a seasonal recreation swim team for children 5-17 years old. The program typically begins in late June and goes through the first week of August. Practices are held three nights per week at Horowitz Pool in Henry Park.The Head Coach is responsible for all aspects of coaching and maintain the swim club program including organizing practices, meets and is the primary communicator to parents and participants.

General Duties
  • Maintain a clean, safe, positive and family friendly program atmosphere
  • Maintain positive relationships with other members of the Central Connecticut Swim League, parents, participants and other staff members
  • Attend all Central Connecticut Swim League meetings relevant to VGSC
  • Attend all swim team events such as meets, meetings, championships, social events, fundraising, etc.
  • Attend all practices and have lessons planned in advance for practice.
  • Assist facility staff to ensure all facility, Town of Vernon and Parks and Recreation Department policies and procedure are followed.
  • Administer the program in accordance with all Town of Vernon policies, Vernon Parks and Recreation Department polices and best practices.
  • Recruit volunteers to assist with timing and officiating home swim meets.
  • Assist with setup and breakdown of facility during practices and home swim meets.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned by the Vernon Parks and Recreation Department.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Previous swim team/competitive swimming experience required.
  • Reliable transportation required.
  • Minimum two years previous experience coaching a swim team required.
  • Previous experience coaching children preferred.
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification required.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification preferred.
Physical and mental effort and Work Conditions
  • Must be in good physical conditions.
  • Able to lift objects in excess of 30 pounds.
  • Able to concentrate for extended periods of time.
  • Able to sit, stand, squat and swim for extended periods of time.
  • Able to attend to tasks for 45 minutes.
  • Able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination.
  • Able to see objects closely and far away.
  • Able to hear normal sounds with background noise.
  • Possible exposure to blood, body tissues or fluids.
  • Exposure to outside weather conditions.
