Position Description
Design and produce print, digital and interactive materials that support the City of Minneapolis organization in achieving its mission, vision and goals through effective communication. Support the Public Works' Transportation Planning and Programming Division's team of transportation planning professionals as they work to institute plans, programs and projects. This position will support citywide transportation goals of climate, safety, equity, prosperity, mobility and active partnerships. Advance priorities and projects in line with the City's Transportation Action Plan, Racial Equity Framework for Transportation, Vision Zero commitment, Complete Streets policy, and mode shift campaign, As You Go, Minneapolis. Support capital project development for transportation projects via creation of visual information.
The anticipated starting salary for this position is step 1 $31.19 - step 2 $32.75.
Work Location: This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work with some days working remotely and some days working in the office.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Create graphics that display project materials and concept layouts for a wide variety of projects in print and digital environments, including selecting colors, artwork, photography, type style, and other visual elements that reflect the City's brand standard and achieve intended results.

• Work with project teams to generate ideas and determine the best visual communication strategy for specific projects.

• Coordinate on and off-site printing, including defining print parameters, reviewing printer proofs and coordinating necessary approvals before final production.

• Participate in developing and managing City's brand policy and graphic standards.

• Design and optimize graphics for the web and for social media (photos, banners, icons, etc.).

• Support Division's webpage; taking work direction from supervisor, collaborate with IT, Communications and transportation planners to ensure project priorities are accessible to the public via City webpage.

• Order and maintain inventory of supplies, materials and services relating to graphics from outside vendors.

• Develop templates for professional reports, presentations and other communication needs.

• Provide quick turnaround of design proposals and final art, working within brand standards, tight deadlines, and within budgets.

• Support the division's efforts to capture impact of work through a strong photo library; help maintain relevant training on division camera; and organize and maintain the division's photo library.

Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications :
Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Mass Communication, Journalism or equivalent (Various combinations of training and experience may qualify)

Minimum Experience :
Two years of experience working as a graphic designer presenting, and/or publishing information for print, video, multimedia and/or the web.
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

Selection Process
The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience 100.00. Only those candidates who attain a passing score 70.00 on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. Eligible List Statement

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of graphics design, drafting techniques related to desktop publishing, digital and interactive processes, printing processes, including strong skills in the latest version of Adobe, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and/or other rendering software, etc.

• Strong skills in print design and production.

• An understanding of web design and basic HTML/CSS and a strong understanding of designing and optimizing graphics for the web (photos, banners, icons).

• Considerable knowledge of and skill in Microsoft Office applications.

• Strong oral and written communication skills and proven ability to work as part of a collaborative team.

• Ability to organize projects, work under deadline pressures and prioritize work assignments.

• Ability to keep abreast and adapt to advances in technology in the graphics field, including generative AI.

• vFluent in creating accessible products per latest ADA guidance.

• Independent and creative thinker who can take initiative and advance new ideas.
