About the Harry Ransom Center

The Ransom Center is an internationally renowned humanities research library and museum at The University of Texas at Austin. Its extensive collections provide unique insight into the creative process of writers and artists, deepening our understanding and appreciation of literature, photography, film, art, and the performing arts. Visitors engage with the Center's collections through research and study, exhibitions, publications, and a rich variety of program offerings including readings, talks, symposia, and film screenings.

Purpose

The Graphic Designer is a full-time position responsible for assisting in creating visually engaging designs that support the Ransom Center's mission of advancing understanding of the humanities through the sharing of our extraordinary collections.

Responsibilities
  • Produce a wide range of print and electronic materials for promotion of programs, services, and the needs of day-to-day operations using up-to-date knowledge of industry software and design trends, particularly within the Adobe Creative Suite. Materials include brochures, exhibition identity, ads, presentations, graphics, promotional displays, signage, vinyl design, environmental design, web, print, and social media design.
  • Consult with immediate supervisor to determine the most appropriate method for preparing work to meet production deadlines and collaborate with multiple departments, vendors, and printers to coordinate, manage, and produce materials.
  • Other related functions as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual arts, or related field.
  • 1 year of graphic design and production experience, preferably in a humanities or higher education setting.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to adhere to brand guidelines.
  • Basic knowledge of typography, color theory, and layout principles.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of industry software and design trends, particularly within the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Pro-active communication and interpersonal skills (both verbal and written)
  • Demonstrated professional demeanor, problem solver, and ability to work collaboratively and independently
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 2+ years of graphic design and production experience, preferably in a library or archive setting
  • Experience with project management software such as Asana, Planner, or similar.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
  • Interest in libraries, archives, or cultural institutions, with a strong understanding of their role in education and engagement.
Salary Range

$50,000, non-negotiable

Working Conditions
  • Work performed on multiple projects concurrently, under pressure of rigid deadlines and time limitations.
  • May work around standard office conditions
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation
  • Lifting and moving (must be able to lift 20 lbs.)

  • Requires interacting directly with outside vendors.
Work Shift
  • Standard M-F, 40 hours per week, with the possibility of flexible scheduling and remote opportunities.

Employment Eligibility:

Retirement Plan Eligibility:
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
