Summary: Responsible for overseeing the Geographic Information System (GIS) team at our electric, natural gas, and fiber cooperative. This role ensures the effective creation, maintenance, and management of GIS databases, maps, and graphs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned.)

Support the planning, design, and implementation of electric, natural gas, and fiber infrastructure projects using GIS data and analysis.

Collaborate with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to provide GIS support for utility network management and infrastructure planning.

Develop and maintain GIS datasets for electric, natural gas, and fiber networks, ensuring data accuracy and completeness.

Assist in emergency response and outage management by providing GIS-based solutions for damage assessment and restoration planning.

Create and manage GIS-based asset management systems to track the condition and lifecycle of infrastructure assets.

Implement GIS solutions to enhance the efficiency and reliability of utility services, including route optimization and network analysis.

Ensure GIS data supports regulatory compliance and reporting requirements for electric, natural gas, and fiber operations.

Coordinate with external agencies and stakeholders to share GIS data and collaborate on regional planning initiatives.

Stay informed about industry trends and advancements in GIS technology to apply innovative solutions to utility challenges.

Shall rotate as system "on call" supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises the mapping technicians/engineering tech II

Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in GIS, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong knowledge of GIS software and tools, such as ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, and other related programs.
  • Experience with database management, spatial analysis, and data visualization techniques.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various departments and stakeholders.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Professional certification in GIS (e.g., GISP). preferred
  • Experience with web-based GIS applications and tools.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, SQL, or JavaScript.
  • Experience in the utility industry, particularly with electric, natural gas, and fiber networks.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or use stairways. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment
Work is typically performed in an office environment. Occasional fieldwork may be required to gather or verify GIS data. May involve some travel to attend conferences or training sessions.
