Do you have technical experience with database administration and/or GIS? The City of Madison Information Technology Department is looking to hire an entry-level GIS and Database Administrator to perform database administration and GIS support work. This is objective level professional work in the support of automated management information systems. This work is characterized by the independent application of professional skills in providing standardized developmental or support activities, and/or serving as a contributing member on more diverse team efforts. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Team Leader (Principal IT Specialist).
This series is structured to provide advancement from an IT Specialist 2 to an IT Specialist 3, as a function of the employee's career development and generally occurs after two years.

Examples of Duties and ResponsibilitiesDatabase Administrator: - Support processes to ensure databases are backed up, and test backups, in accordance with application needs.
- Work with Server Administrators to develop architecture to ensure high availability of systems according to application needs.
- Troubleshoot database outages as they occur, including after hours and weekends.
- As new databases and system are brought online, work with development team to set up appropriate backup and availability requirements.
- Install and configure new database servers.
- Deploy database change scripts provided by third party vendors.
- As performance issues arise, determine the most effective way to increase performance including hardware purchases, server configuration changes, or index/query changes.
- Support database accounts and permissions following the City's policies.
- Assist developers in troubleshooting database coding and design issues.
- Document the City's database environment.
- Maintain Database Policies and Guidelines, updating as needed.
- Perform continuous upgrade of database environment to stay current with supported versions of SQL.
GIS Support: - Support the GIS/ESRI environment:
- Administer licenses
- Set-up permissions
- Manage desktop versions
- Manage back-end versions
- Manage integrations
- Provide documentation
- Perform scripting
- Perform business analysis
- Support by assisting in publishing new data.
- Support Publishing of Maps and Apps.
- Serve as the Main Point of Contact with ESRI.
Internal Administrative Tasks: - Include racial equity and social justice considerations in projects and initiatives .
- Attend training on technologies and other required job skills as needed.
- Attend Team Meetings - prepare and follow up, participate in meetings.
- Perform recordkeeping such as time spent on various tasks, tracking progress on tasks and recording new assignments.
- Communicate with customers by participating in analysis meetings, following up for information via email or phone, keeping customers apprised of status, all by following protocols that may be particular to a customer or project.
- Participate in on-call rotation.
Perform related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications- Four (4) years of professional information technology experience in two (2) of the following three (3) areas:
- RDBMS systems, such as Microsoft SQL, TSQL language and database servers.
- ESRI suite of products.
- Python and/or FME scripting.
Familiarity with the following: - Client/server and n-tier applications and issues related to them.
- Windows 10/11 desktop Operating System.
- Microsoft Office Suite of products.
OR - Two (2) years of professional experience in two (2) of the three (3) areas noted above, and
- Degree in computer science or a related field,.

Physical Requirements:
Work is primarily sedentary in nature and performed in an office environment. Employees will be expected to use standard office equipment such as a telephone, computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Must have the ability to view and interpret a map online.

Employees earn 3.5 personal days in addition to vacation.
