General Counsel - Commercial Property Tax Law

Salary: $150K-$250K (DOE) + benefits
Location: Chesterfield, MO 63005

Overview
The General Counsel is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all legal, compliance, and risk management aspects of the business, including tax appeals across all company markets. This role reports directly to the CEO and Chief of Staff.

This position requires a highly strategic legal professional with expertise in tax appeal law, contract negotiations, and corporate compliance. The ideal candidate will play a key role in shaping the company's legal strategies and expanding its in-house legal capabilities.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Administrative & Compliance
  • Maintain and support a separate law firm entity to represent clients in tax appeal proceedings where required.
  • Oversee attorney licensing and bar compliance in Missouri, Colorado, Connecticut, and Minnesota, with expansion planned in Illinois, Kansas, and Maryland.
  • Ensure attorneys complete Continuing Legal Education (CLE) and manage associated fees.
  • Utilize CLIO law firm billing and management software for tracking legal department expenses.
  • Attend bi-weekly manager meetings, review legal team progress reports, and conduct employee evaluations.
2. Contract Management
  • Review and edit vendor contracts, employment agreements, and annual leases.
  • Oversee client contract management, including negotiations and revisions.
  • Develop standardized contracts that accommodate state-specific legal requirements.
3. Legal Library & Research
  • Supervise the development of the company's Legal Library, ensuring accessibility for non-lawyers.
  • Collaborate with IT to maintain a structured legal database.
  • Participate in continuing education, including appraisal and valuation studies.
4. Litigation & Appeals
  • Monitor, process, and oversee tax appeals in Missouri, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, and Minnesota.
  • Manage litigation and work with analysts on case strategy and proceedings.
  • Oversee collections litigation and arbitration, ensuring effective legal actions.
5. Strategic Development
  • Develop strategies to reduce reliance on outside counsel by handling more legal matters in-house.
  • Analyze new market opportunities and monitor competitors.
  • Oversee expansion of company-owned law practices.

Required Skills & Qualifications
  • J.D. degree and active bar membership in MO, CO, CT, and MN (or willingness to obtain).
  • 10+ years of legal experience, in tax law, real estate law, corporate law, and litigation.
  • Leadership experience, including managing and motivating legal teams.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong negotiation and contract drafting experience.
  • Ability to study and apply state-specific legal procedures.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally and work extended hours as needed (25%).
