About Gateway Operations
Gateway earth stations are the critical terrestrial infrastructure that connects Globalstar's satellite constellation to terrestrial telecommunications networks. Gateways consist of three or four dish antennas, a switching station and remote operating controls. These facilities serve as vital communication hubs where satellite signals are received, processed, and routed through local and regional telephony networks.
Position Summary
The Gateway Intern will work directly with the gateway site manager and technical personnel to support the operational maintenance and monitoring of critical satellite communication infrastructure. This hands-on internship provides exposure to cutting-edge satellite technology, telecommunications systems, and mission-critical operations that enable global connectivity for customers worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Support & Maintenance:
- Assist in routine maintenance procedures for gateway equipment including satellite dish antennas, switching stations, and control systems
- Support preventive maintenance schedules to ensure optimal gateway performance and uptime
- Help monitor system performance parameters and alert senior technicians to anomalies
- Participate in equipment testing and calibration procedures
Operational Support:
- Follow established procedures for gateway operations and document results accurately
- Assist with daily operational checks and system status reporting
- Support troubleshooting activities under supervision of experienced technicians
- Help maintain operational logs and technical documentation
Learning & Development:
- Gain hands-on experience with satellite communication systems and earth station technology
- Learn CDMA technology principles and satellite signal processing
- Develop understanding of telecommunications infrastructure integration
- Participate in training sessions on safety procedures and technical protocols
Administrative Support:
- Report maintenance activities and system status to gateway personnel
- Assist with inventory management of spare parts and equipment
- Support preparation of operational reports and documentation
- Maintain clean and organized work areas in compliance with safety standards
Required Qualifications
Education:
- Currently enrolled in Telecommunication, Electronic, or Electric Technology program at an accredited technical school
- OR completing final coursework toward Telecommunication, Electrical, or Electronic Engineering degree
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow technical procedures precisely
- Basic understanding of electronic systems and telecommunications principles
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a technical team
- Physical ability to work with equipment in various indoor and outdoor environments
- Strong communication skills for reporting and documentation
Language Requirements:
- English proficiency required
- Spanish language skills highly desirable
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous coursework or experience with RF/microwave systems
- Familiarity with satellite communication principles
- Basic knowledge of networking and telecommunications protocols
- Experience with technical documentation and reporting
- Interest in pursuing career in telecommunications or satellite technology
