Pay: $21.74 hourly
The work hours for this position are rotational shift hours of 3pm-11pm and/or 11pm-7am

Minimum Preparation for Work:
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent; and

  • Two (2) years of experience in gas systems, dispatching, customer service call center, other pertinent utility work or any equivalent combination or related training and experience in one of these fields.

Or

  • Combination of education, training, and/or work experience equal to or greater than the requirements listed above as determined by Human Resources.

Necessary Special Requirements:
  • Possession of an appropriate driver license for equipment operated and any license, training or certification required by law or regulation to complete assigned tasks.

Nature of Work:
This is technical work in the area of dispatching emergency and routine service calls with the department of Pensacola Energy.

An employee in this class is responsible for receiving requests for service including emergency work through a centralized communications center. This work involves the making of operational decisions in the absence of supervisory personnel and within the framework of established procedures of this department. An employee in this class is expected to exercise judgment and initiative in determining the response priority of each situation and in dealing with the public, employees and other agencies. This employee must be able to work rotating or permanent shifts. This position is categorized as essential which requires working during emergency conditions. Work is reviewed through observation of operations and analysis of daily reports.

Examples of Work:
  • Relays emergency information in accordance with established procedures.
  • Completes and maintains all operator qualifications required.
  • Receives complaints and emergency calls; assesses calls and determines needs of caller; prioritizes routine and emergency gas calls; responds to questions relating to all
  • aspects of gas operation.
  • Dispatches appropriate trucks to emergency, routine, and service order calls; provides crews with engineering, service, main, address, and customer information.
  • Creates, routes and assigns orders to service crews and locate trucks.
  • Create, receive and complete One-Call Sunshine locate tickets via computer.
  • Provides alert notifications to necessary personnel during emergency conditions.
  • Monitors dispatch phones, multi-ban radio consoles, security cameras and alarms, as well as property access.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the gas distribution system.
  • Knowledge of the functions, procedures, policies, and regulations of the gas department.
  • Knowledge in the operating characteristics of the communications equipment used in the system.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city and county.
  • Knowledge of the principles, procedures, methods, and practices pertinent to gas measurement and regulation.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local procedures, codes, and regulations, which pertain to gas distribution and control.
  • Knowledge of public safety information.
  • Ability to read engineering maps and drawings.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
  • Ability to plan and assign work to others.
  • Ability to use and comprehend computers and software.
  • Ability to perform multiple duties simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to think clearly, act quickly, and calmly in emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Ability to elicit information necessary for proper dispatching.
  • Skill in the use of computer aided dispatch systems; radio transmitting and receiving equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to hold or feel, reach with hands and arms, walk, talk, smell and hear. Work Environment:
