Responsibilities
- The incumbent is supervised by the Principal(s) of FSUS, or by another appropriate administrator of Florida State University. They are responsible for planning and conducting classes for FSUS students, for academic advising and related activities, and for assisting with student supervision. Attendance is required at staff conferences and curriculum development activities, with required involvement in action research, creative endeavors, and service.
- Plan, organize, and deliver effective instruction for middle and high school band classes.
- Direct various ensembles, including but not limited to marching band, concert band, jazz band, and pep band.
- Collaborate with the choir director, theater director, and other faculty to provide instrumental support for school musicals, theatrical, or other performing arts productions.
- Oversee rehearsals, performances, and student participation in competitions, festivals, and community events.
- Develop and implement a vertically aligned 6-12 instrumental music curriculum
- Recruit and retain students for the band program through engaging activities and communication with families.
- Coordinate with school administrators, music staff, and booster organizations.
- Maintain and manage band equipment, uniforms, sheet music, and instruments inventory.
- Prepare and manage the band budget in collaboration with administration and boosters.
- Provide supervision and instruction during after-school rehearsals, performances, and trips.
- Stay current with best practices in music education and maintain professional development.
- Uphold classroom management standards and ensure student safety and discipline during all activities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Music Education or related field (Master's preferred).
- Valid State of Florida Teaching Certification in Music 6-12 that must be maintained throughout employment.
- CPR/First Aid and Heart/Head/Heat certification or willingness to obtain.
- Experience teaching and directing bands at the middle and/or high school level.
- Proficiency in wide range of band instruments and instructional techniques.
- Ability to read and adapt musical scores for live performance settings.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, staff, and broader community.
