Description This position will assume the responsibility for coordinating all processes and personnel involved with production, quality, and supply of foundation seed (FS). The main focus will be to secure genetic uniformity and purity of parental lines received from the breeders or/and available in inventory. Responsible for production and maintaining FS in pure and uniform state through the life- cycle of hybrids. Responsible for securing accurate parental descriptors from the breeders and maintaining the information database to facilitate production and quality control of stock product and commercial product. Communicate with Stock product to team to facilitate the SS production.
This position will be also responsible for completing genetic purity and quality control for commercial hybrid product.
Requirements - Coordinate production and maintenance of FS of advanced pre-commercial and commercial hybrids. Assumes close collaboration with the breeders and production personnel.
- Collaborate and work with breeders to fix the breeding line before FSI and ensure to increase FS from fixed lines only. Return the segregating FS lines back to the breeder and manage the FS records keeping properly.
- Plan and supervise the production of FS sufficient for a minimum of 2 production cycles of SS. For Solanum crops, the FS production activities will be carried out in Hollister Station; cucurbit FS will be produced in Bakersfield Station.
- Directly participates in field visits to all FS production sites at specified crop stages to assess phenotypic uniformity and genetic purity.
- Directly responsible for creating and maintaining parent line information and inventory of FS. Works closely with the personnel responsible for management of the parent line databases, physical inventory, and production forecasting of commercial product.
- Assumes responsibility for all aspects of Quality related to FS. The focus will be on genetic purity but also includes germination, and product health.
- Liaise with IT and Production personnel to provide and secure timely input of parental and hybrid descriptors and other information as needed by production and QA. Works closely with Production and Product Management on 3-5 year SS requirements for commercial product.
- Analyze genotypic data for commercial hybrid lot and determine if purity grow out is needed.
- Complete purity grow out (PGO), including coordinate sowing and transplant and evaluate the hybrids and make suggestions of sellable lots to the management by referring DNA purity and PGO results.
- Comply with health and safety standards, programs and industry codes in accordance with federal, county and state agencies (CCR Title 8, EPA, RCRA, CERCLA, NFPA, and FDA) and regulations. Follow control measures for exposure to hazardous materials or conditions.
- Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.
Years and Type of Related Experience Required: Minimum of two (2) years of relevant field experience.

- Technical and Analytical: Use common office equipment (computer, printer, fax machine, copier and phone). Knowledge of: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. Analytical mind to recognize the problems and find solutions and to apply the fundamental skills and working knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures necessary for fulfilling responsibilities. Requires great attention to detail.
- Administrative and Operations: Ability to organize, set priorities, schedule and review work. Be able to manage time to accomplish daily/short term goals set by production manager/station manager.
- Physical Demands: Deal calmly and effectively in a seasonally demanding work environment. Working flexible hours or over-time on short notice may be required. Must be able to work in the office and fields/greenhouses and cages under various ambient conditions, particularly reduced air-quality and in periods of high temperatures possible exceeding 100 degrees F. Must be physically fit to walk, bend, kneel, squat, bend your neck, and lift up to 25 lbs.
- Work Environment: Office, outdoor, cages and greenhouse work with temperatures close to 100 degrees, walk on uneven surface and often be exposed to chemicals.
