Job Title: Assistant Athletic Coach - Middle School
Classification: Extra Duty Compensation
Supervisor: Building Principal / Assistant Principal
Summary: The Assistant Coach will work to carry out the aims and objectives of the sports program as outlined by the Head Coach. The Assistant Coach instructs athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategy, and physical training necessary to realize individual and team success.
Supervisory Responsibilities: The Assistant Coach is responsible to the building principal and Head Coach. The Assistant Coach supervises athletes, and the teams assigned to them and assumes managing control over all athletes in the program when such control is needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Has a thorough knowledge of all the Athletic Policies endorsed by the Medford School District Board of Education and is responsible for its compliance.
- Has knowledge of Southern Oregon Middle School Athletic Conference rules and regulations, implements those same consistently, and is responsible for compliance.
- Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through appropriate channels.
- Works to increase morale and cooperation within the school's athletic program.
- Knows effective safety procedures in their sport, plans and implements a program of instruction in safe practices.
Administrative Duties: - Assists the Head Coach in scheduling and making travel arrangements when asked.
- Works with the Head Coach to prepare and adhere to scheduled facility times.
- Assists the Head Coach in compliance with district requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent forms, insurance waivers, and eligibility.
- Assists the Head Coach in providing proper safeguards for maintaining and protecting assigned equipment and facilities and teaching the planned safety program.
Student Responsibilities: - Provides training rules and any other unique sports regulations to each athlete considered a participant.
- Supervises the athletes before, during, and after practices, contests, or while traveling, and provides proper guidance and safeguards for each participant by their presence.
- Follows the program implemented by the Head Coach related to injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
- Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians on respective teams.
- Determines discipline following State, district, and school guidelines, policies, and procedures. Teaches athletes rules and procedures concerning due process when enforcing discipline is necessary. Contacts parents when a student is dropped or ineligible for team rule infractions.
Equipment and Facilities: - Is accountable to the Head Coach for all equipment, assists in identifying lost or stolen equipment, and issues fine and hold notices to the Office.
- Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' office and authorizes who may enter.
- Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on the general cleanliness of the facility.
- If custodians are not on duty, secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building.
- Instills respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use in each player.
Program Responsibilities: - Assists the Head Coach in carrying out their responsibilities.
- Instruct team members on changes in the rules and teaches the fundamentals of the sport as outlined by the Head Coach.
- Works within the basic framework and philosophy of the Head Coach of that sport.
- Attends all staff meetings as required by the Head Coach
- Arrives early before practice and contests to prepare adequately and remains long enough afterward to help players with problems or participate in staff discussions.
- Never criticize, admonishes, or argue with the Head Coach or any staff member within earshot or view of players, parents, or fans.
- Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources made available by the Head Coach.
- Attends most of the contests, when possible, of other teams in the program.
- Performs other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position, and the Head Coach may request that.

Knowledge: - Of rules and regulations of the sport to which assigned.
- Of fundamentals, techniques, and strategies of the sport to which assigned.
- Of safety factors involved in the sport assigned.
- Of physical ability and limitations of the level they are teaching.
- Of the Medford School District Athletic Policies, OSAA Rules and Regulations, and SOMSAC Guidelines.
Skills: - Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with people.
- Must be able to demonstrate basic skills of sport to which assigned.
- Must be able to organize, supervise, and evaluate the total sports program.
Attitudes: - Must be positive.
- Should be enthusiastic.
- Should possess a willingness to cooperate and adjust to various situations.
Experience: - Previous coaching experience of sport to which assigned is preferred.
- Previous experience as a participant in sport to which assigned preferred.
- Previous teaching experience preferred.
Education: - Valid Oregon teacher certification is preferred.
- College training in coaching is desirable.
