Summary Objective The purpose of this position is to supervise fleet vehicle and heavy equipment repair, preventive maintenance and inventory control operations and activities. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings. Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary. Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals. Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed. Enforces safety procedures to ensure safe operation of equipment and employee safety. Prepares and submits cost estimates, bid specifications, and bid requests, and recommends the procurement of services, equipment, supplies and materials. Monitors inventory levels and orders parts, supplies, equipment, and materials. Plans, schedules, directs and supervises the personnel and activities of the fleet vehicle and heavy equipment repair, preventive maintenance and inventory control operations. Determines vehicular, equipment or electronic malfunctions, failures, repairs, maintenance or auto body repair; and prepares work orders. Coordinates shop activities to expedite workflow. Inspects completed work to verify conformance with prescribed work procedures and work quality standards, and tours work area to determine progress of scheduled work. Monitors the fleet preventive maintenance program, coordinates and schedules appointments for vehicular maintenance. Provides technical assistance and instruction concerning vehicle repair, vehicle maintenance, auto body repair and inventory control programs, procedures, methods and techniques. Maintains records and files of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance work. Collects statistical data, prepares reports, assists in budget preparation, and completes special projects. Evaluates and recommends improvements in department procedures and operations. Performs related work as assigned. Minimum Requirements MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Certificate from a two-year (2) vocational program: Auto Mechanics or Diesel Mechanics. Four (4) years of fleet management, fleet operations, vehicle repair and preventive maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Must submit to and pass pre-employment and random alcohol and drug tests as mandated by the Department of Transportation. Must wear safety equipment as mandated by OSHA. Must be on 24-hour call. Must possess and maintain a valid state drivers license with an acceptable driving history. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
