Shop fitter/Fabricator - Fabrication & Machining. In this position, you will effectively and accurately utilize various metal fabricating and welding techniques to assemble metal components as specified by blueprints, work orders, and oral instructions. This is considered a skilled position that requires knowledge of various methods of gas metal welding as well as knowledge of various plates, sheets, and structural shapes in steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and galvanized metals. This position also requires a strong skill set for reading and interpreting blueprints, dimensioning, welding symbols, etc. The various types of welding includes: GMAW, GTAW, SAW, and SMAW. This position has tiered levels based on the complexity of assignments and certifications held.
There are two levels of Fitter Fabricators:
- Fitter Fabricator I - Holds a variety of welding certifications and is able to fit and fabricate basic to moderately complex jobs.
- Fitter Fabricator II - Able to fit and fabricate complex jobs and perform in a leadership capacity with an assigned welder.
This individual will have a thorough understanding of all aspects of industrial fabrication and must be proficient with the products and services offered by the company and must be flexible and willing to work extended hours as needed.
What You'll Do
- Safely and efficiently operate assigned equipment
- Read and understand drawings and blueprints, and accurately execute work orders and quality assurance (QA) standards per job requirements
- Identify, lay-out, position, and secure parts and assemblies according to specifications and/or prints using various measuring devices such as straightedge, combination square, gages, tape measures, etc. to ensure fabrications/assemblies conform to quality standards and specified design
- Tack-weld or weld components and assemblies, using welding equipment
- Perform structural welding using a variety of procedures, such as the groove weld, fillet weld complete joint penetration, and partial joint penetration
- Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions
- Perform quality checks during production to ensure parts/pieces meet tolerance requirements
- Follow proper procedures when defective parts are discovered
- Facilitate setups and changeovers within welding machine capacities
- Ignite, operate and cut metal via oxy/acetylene and plasma torches and adjust valves, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc
- Secure work pieces and operate stops and guides for proper alignment
- Operates overhead and jib cranes to move, lift and place metals and weldments.
- Exercise proper care, maintenance, and operation of company equipment
- Monitor and assist plant operations in accordance with company policies and plant standard operating procedures
- Perform any general work or other assignments necessary to ensure safe, clean, and efficient shop operations
- Obtain Competent Operator Certification and safely operate the overhead cranes
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and inspection of shop tools and equipment
- Maintain a clean and organized work area at all times
- Assist with organizing materials and supplies for jobs
- Communicate and work effectively with shop personnel, supervisors, and management to achieve project goals
- Lead and mentor assigned Welder
- Provide feedback for performance reviews of assigned Welders as required
Working Conditions - Sit, talk, hear, read, and write
- Walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms
- Stand for extended periods of time
- Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Perform duties indoors in a shop setting with occasional work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
What You'll Bring
- 2+ years of welding and fabrication experience in an Industrial Metal Shop preferred
- Must successfully complete a weld test required prior to employment
- Ability to pass certifications in both GMAW and GTAW welding required within 30 days
- Advanced ability in reading and interpreting blueprints to include dimensioning, welding symbols, etc.
- Proficient in the use of manual plasma cutter and oxyfuel cutting torch
- Possess advanced knowledge of metal plate types (steel, aluminum, stainless, galvanized, etc.) sizes, and shapes (beams, channels, angles, pipe, flat bar, etc.)
- Advanced knowledge of proper use of equipment, materials, and supplies used in an industrial shop setting
- Highly skilled in the use of measuring devices such as tape measures, squares, protractors, compasses, micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, etc.
- Advanced knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of metal fabrications or other structures
- Possess a mechanical aptitude with experience in related tasks
- Ability to read and interpret WPS with the ability to adjust machine settings to conform to WPS while maintaining desired arc
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
- Must be dependable, trustworthy, possess a positive attitude, and be willing to work independently or in a team environment
- Must possess strong math skills including adding, subtracting, decimals, and fractions
- Ability to effectively multitask
- Ability to meet strict deadlines and prioritize competing work assignments
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Experience with the use of an overhead crane
- Valid driver's license is required
