WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING? The Fitness Specialist is responsible for planning and leading safe, effective, and engaging fitness classes and wellness programs tailored to older adults. This role emphasizes improving mobility, balance, strength, and cardiovascular health while promoting independence and quality of life. The Fitness Specialist must be compassionate, knowledgeable, and experienced in working with seniors in both group and one-on-one settings.
The Fitness Specialist will create, facilitate and lead daily exercise classes for residents as well as upgrade and modify the level of exercise classes where appropriate.
- Design, lead and facilitate age-appropriate group fitness classes such as chair aerobics, balance training, stretching, strength training, and functional fitness
- Develop, schedule, organize, and conduct/oversee fitness programs for residents, customized to the resident population's interests, from residents who are independent, and those needing assistance, to those with Mild Cognitive Impairment and other memory disorders
- Create a daily and monthly calendar or schedule of fitness programs. Post schedule in several prominent places in the community. Work with Reception to ensure the calendar is dispersed throughout the community and made available to both residents and families
- Teach specialized arthritis and balance classes
- Instruct residents on safe use of gym equipment, supervise their usage at scheduled times of day, and track the progress of all participants, including assisting residents with completion of a self-evaluation upon move-in and every six (6) months
- Effectively communicate and collaborate with resident's care partners (such as OT, PT and physicians) as it relates to fitness programs
REQUIREMENTS / WHAT WE EXPECT: - Degree in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science or Health/Fitness required
- Certification in Group Fitness or Personal Training (e.g. ACE, AFAA, NASM, ACSM) required
- CPR/AED certification required
- Senior-specific certification strongly preferred (e.g. ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist, ACE Senior Fitness Specialist, SilverSneakers , Functional Aging Specialist)
- Experience leading fitness classes for older adults or in senior living environments required
- Background and education in kinesiology, gerontology, physical therapy or related field required
- Sincere desire and ability to work with seniors from independent to cognitively impaired.
- Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm
