The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Fitness and Wellness Supervisor, the Fitness Instructor is responsible for leading safe and effective fitness classes.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Ensure the safety of the class area prior to starting classes.
  2. Prepare routines and musical accompaniment that adhere to current industry guidelines and standards for exercise in a group setting.
  3. Maintain current knowledge of leading trends in the fitness industry.
  4. Maintain open lines of communication with the Fitness and Wellness Supervisor.
  5. Arrange for qualified substitutes when unable to teach a scheduled class. Inform the Fitness and Wellness Supervisor of all changes.
  6. Ensure all equipment is properly stored and locked at the conclusion of class.
  7. Attend all regularly scheduled staff meetings, training days, and workshops.
  8. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
  1. Ensure all equipment is used in a manner that promotes safety and is stored properly.
  2. Ability to teach to all fitness levels.
  3. Excellent customer service, ability to manage conflicts, and create an inclusive environment.
  4. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Ability to quickly and effectively respond to emergencies.
  6. Interpret and implement proper policies and procedures for all emergencies.
  7. Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
  8. Ability to develop effective working relationships with a diverse community clientele.
  9. Able to lift 45 pounds safely and stand for an extended period of time.
  10. Required COVID vaccination verification or qualified exemption
Qualification and Specifications
  1. Nationally recognized group fitness certification required (NASM, ACE, ACSM, Zumba, UJam, yoga, etc.)
  2. Minimum 6 month's teaching experience preferred.
  3. Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, American Red Cross preferred. Online certifications will not be accepted.
  4. Demonstrate ability to safely instruct a group class including: skilled coaching, proper technique, appropriate choreography, and ability to utilize the beat.
Guidelines
This position is non-exempt from the provisions of Section 1 of the California Industrial Welfare Commission Orders.
Minimum Salary: $23.00- Maximum Salary: $35.00

Additional Information:
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Student Union at SJSU will issue a contingent offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current SU, Inc. employee who was offered the position on a contingent basis.
The standard background check includes: criminal check, employment and education verification. Depending on the position, a motor vehicle and/or credit check may be required. All background checks are conducted through the Student Union third-party vendor, Accurate Background. Some positions may also require fingerprinting. SJSU will pay all costs associated with this procedure.
