SUMMARY

Do you have a passion for teaching fitness in your community? The City of Edgewater is seeking part-time Fitness Instructor(s) to supervise and instruct community members in any of the following categories of fitness and wellness-based programing: strength/circuit/HIIT training, yoga, or any other specialized fitness classes. The Fitness Instructor can design and lead programs for adults (18+) and/or seniors (55+). The program type, curriculum, age group, and class schedule will be determined with consideration for the instructor's availability, skills, and expertise, while also aligning with community interest and participation. Our ideal candidate will be prepared, creative, and energized while providing a safe fitness environment. If hired, the candidate will have the option of joining the City of Edgewater as a part-time employee or be contracted as an external vendor.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to the following:

• Develop dynamic and engaging fitness curriculum based on expertise and skillset.

• Set up all equipment necessary in advance of the program start.

• Communicate effectively with registered participants.

• Communicate effectively with Programs Coordinator, including making recommendations for equipment purchases.

• Assist in marketing efforts to increase awareness of the program instructed and other programs offered by the City of Edgewater.

• Maintain a safe and inclusive environment for program participants.

• Maintain a positive attitude, take initiative, and work as a cohesive team with all staff members to ensure efficiency and camaraderie.

• Responds to accidents or incidents according to procedures. Effectively handles emergency situations involving fire alarms, CPR and First Aid.

• Upholds City and Department policies and procedures as well as applicable laws.

• Maintains regular and punctual attendance.

• Participates in all training(s) and staff meetings as required.

• Any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Programs Coordinator.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

1) Must have legal authorization to work in the United States of America.

2) Submit and pass a pre-employment background check.

3) Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

4) Have a certification in group fitness from a national accredited organization and, if applicable, have a certificate in any additional specialized fitness instruction.

5) If contracting, the instructor must provide their own insurance.

The City of Edgewater maintains a drug-free work environment. No employee shall report for duty impaired by or under the influence of alcohol or drugs to the slightest degree. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

• Basic verbal and written English language skills and grammar to reasonably communicate information with the public and/or complete relevant written documentation required by job activities.

• Spanish language skills preferred.

• Excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.

• The ability to perform multiple functions at once and the ability to handle the public in a friendly and professional manner.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

• Must possess or be able to obtain First Aid, CPR and AED Certification.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES

• Prior experience teaching community-based fitness programs - preferred.

• Previous experience working with adults and/or older adults - preferred.

• Comprehensive knowledge of a specific skill or knowledge that has the potential to design a program around.

• The patience and demeanor required to work varying personalities and abilities.

• Outstanding customer service and interpersonal communication skills, to maintain effective working relationships with citizens, elected officials, appointing authorities, department heads, appointed boards, employees, and volunteers.

• Ability to work independently.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL CONDITIONS

• Effective audio-visual skills and perception needed for making observations, reading, writing, and communicating with others.

• Most duties are performed in an outdoor environment. The incumbent will experience exposure to weather elements and temperatures, construction site risks, and automobile travel.

• Ability to lift and carry items such as supplies and equipment, up to 50 pounds, on a frequent basis.

• Ability to participate in and respond to routine conversation in person or via telephone, and distinguish telephone, printers, computers, and other auditory tones.

Salary Description

$25.50 - $35.88 hour or % based contract
