As a Fitness Instructor, you'll:
- Lead lively fitness classes at the brand-new Highlands Ranch Senior Center and community locations
- Create upbeat, engaging workouts that keep seniors smiling and moving

- Cardio
- Muscle conditioning
- Strength training
- Group fitness formats like Zumba, Barre, or your own unique style

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - The list of essential duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all-inclusive. They establish a flexible, functional base from which the incumbent operates. They may also be modified with additions, deletions, or changes required to achieve organizational goals and objectives.
- Demonstrates safe and effective exercises for both general and special populations.
- Accurately cues participants through the exercise routine.
- Performs exercises for all major muscle groups.
- Recognizes contraindicated exercises and adapts intensity and exercises to meet the needs of participants.
- Works in an upbeat and positive environment using innovative ideas to assist participants in achieving their personal fitness goals.
- Prepares music and other curriculum materials for class. Chooses music at appropriate beats per minute for class segments.
- Develops and teaches class content appropriate to the course description and level.
- Provides feedback to class participants and proper instruction in use of support materials and equipment.
- Follows class format and fidelity as set by Fitness and Enrichment Coordinator or sponsoring agency (i.e., Silver Sneakers).
- Welcomes and encourages all participants to follow at their own pace.
- Adapts class format to meet the needs of clientele.
- Monitors participants and their ability to participate.
- Monitors attire to properly perform, i.e., shoes, etc., if applicable.
- Reports all concerns to Fitness and Enrichment Coordinator.
- Responsible for finding a dependable, appropriate substitute upon their absence. If a substitute is not available, alert the Fitness and Enrichment Coordinator immediately so the class can be canceled and registrants notified.
- All staff meetings and training courses. When requested, attends special events to promote the fitness programs.
- Checks class rosters and accurately records participant attendance.
- Completes any necessary reports and forms, i.e., Accident Reports, Health Forms, Attendance Records, Supply Requests, etc.
- Must be responsible and punctual.
- May be required to set-up and break-down materials and equipment used for instruction.
- Performs first aid as required, depending on training and certification.
- Complies with District and department rules and regulations, policies and procedures.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the general supervision of the Fitness and Enrichment Coordinator.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED Supervises programs they are scheduled to instruct.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
- Requires current ACE, AFAA, AAAI, NASM or equivalent group exercise and current CPR/AED certification. Must have or be willing to obtain Silver Sneakers Instructor Certification if needed.
- At least six months' experience in teaching fitness classes to older adults is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Knowledge of fitness, health and wellness principles and how to apply them in teaching fitness classes. Must be aware of physical modifications for individuals of all ages/abilities. Must be able to plan, develop and implement a class curriculum as established by certification.
Works in an indoor (and occasional outdoor) setting where incumbent may be subject to noise and distraction; requires extended periods of speaking in a loud voice for up to an hour at a time; requires public relations skills in handling concerns and complaints; entails working closely with others and working with little supervision; and requires excellent organizational/time management skills.
Must be personable; innovative and creative; flexible and versatile; team-oriented; adaptable to fast-paced, changing environments; have strong human relations and communication skills; and be customer service oriented. Administers first aid and CPR in the event of an accident.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Equipment for projecting vocal instructions and music, and program equipment including weights, chairs, bands, etc.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS Requires muscular exertion and/or physical strain and frequent concentration on an activity where the flow of work is intermittent; requires use of hands to fingers, ability to reach, climb, bend, stoop, crouch and occasionally lift objects weighing less than 20 lbs.
