DescriptionDefinition: Under general direction, provides safe, effective, motivating group fitness classes for participants of all fitness levels. Provides leadership while educating, monitoring, and encouraging class participants.

- Attend and be punctual for all scheduled classes and team meetings (in-person and virtual)
- Set up facility for any activity that is needed for assigned class.
- Check and record attendance for each exercise class.
- Maintain attendance and other related operations and financial records, prepare written reports and submit recommendations to the Recreation Supervisor.
- Provide and frequently update a current music/playlist ensuring appropriate language.
- Lead group fitness classes while motivating participants in a safe manner using proper exercise techniques.
- Observe and teach good body mechanics while working with participants to enhance their knowledge of exercise, body alignment and exercise safety.
- Assess continually the participants and their ability level, and communicate to participants any concern or difficulty.
- Develop positive relationships with class participants by teaching a variety of challenging and entertaining group fitness classes
- Enforce policies and procedures of the facility.
- Completes any/all required report after witnessing or providing assistance/care for any/all situations.
- Clean and organize the studio after each class.
- Monitor member satisfaction to ensure a consistently evolving world class fitness experience.
- Consistently look for current and new trends in the fitness industry to elevate members fitness techniques.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Typical QualificationsMinimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability:
Knowledge of:
- Familiar with music downloading/preparation for class(es).
- Personal computers and related software.
- Fitness techniques and Fitness equipment.
- Injury prevention.
- Office methods and procedures.
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Record keeping principles and procedures.
Skill and Ability to:
- Operate a variety of fitness machines, office equipment including personal computer and related software.
- Demonstrate an awareness of self-responsibility and accountability.
- Understand and follow verbal and written direction.
- Work with the public.
Training and Experience: Entry level position as a Fitness Instructor, previous group experience training preferred. Appropriate certification as determined by classes, i.e., ACE, ACSM, NSCA, AFFA or any current professional certification from a nationally recognized organization in the health/fitness industry.
All eligible Fitness Instructor candidates must attend an audition, to demonstrate instructor tone, teaching presence, and musicality/rhythmic awareness.
Following auditions, Instructors will attend program trainings and teach-backs to ensure confidence, consistency, and excellence in teaching each program offered to ensure the eligibility in teaching Cycle, Strength, Cardio, Pilates, Yoga, and Barre classes.
Supplemental InformationLicenses and Certificates:
- Fitness Training Certification.
- Must maintain current all applicable certificates.
- Personal Training Certification from an accredited organization (ACE, NSCA, NASM, IDEA).
- Possession or is required to obtain the American Red Cross certificate for First Aid/CPR. within 60 days of employment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:- Requires vision (which may be corrected) to read small print.
- Requires mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
- Full body mobility.
- Performs lifting, pushing and/or pulling which may exceed 50 pounds.
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
This position is a temporary position and not eligible to participate in any benefit programs of the City, except those mandated by federal or state law.
Must participate in a PARS Alterantive Retirement System 457 Plan as a replacement for Social Security.
