Our client is seeking a mission-aligned and detail-oriented Controller to join their finance team. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the financial health, transparency, and sustainability of the organization, supporting their mission through sound fiscal stewardship. The ideal candidate will bring nonprofit accounting experience, a collaborative spirit, and a commitment to operational excellence.


This is an onsite Position is San Jose California.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the day-to-day accounting and financial operations, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Partner with an external consulting team to strengthen financial reporting systems and data integrity.
  • Prepare accurate, timely monthly financial reports for two legal entities to support programmatic and organizational decision-making.
  • Perform quarterly reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts and provide variance (flux) analysis.
  • Lead the preparation and submission of financial reports for all grants, ensuring compliance with funder requirements.
  • Supervise and support the Accounts Payable, Payroll, and Grants Receivable teams, promoting efficiency and accountability.
  • Manage and maintain the Chart of Accounts in Sage Intacct, aligning with evolving organizational needs.
  • Maintain and update financial policies and procedures to reflect best practices and compliance standards.
  • Assist the CFO in monitoring and strengthening internal controls and financial oversight.
  • Coordinate with external auditors for annual audits, including Single Audit, 5500, workers' comp, and grant monitoring reviews.
  • Champion continuous improvement efforts in financial systems, including Sage Intacct and Paycom.
  • Participate in monthly Leadership Team meetings, providing strategic financial insights and cross-functional collaboration.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or nonprofit accounting certification preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a nonprofit setting.
  • Experience leading a single audit
  • Proficiency in Sage Intacct and Paycom (or similar systems).
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting.
  • Demonstrated experience in audit preparation and grant financial reporting.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Passion for the mission and values of the organization.
