A well established and prestigious, client-focused law firm with a strong reputation for excellence in legal services is seeking a dynamic and experienced Controller to lead the financial operations and help guide the firm through its next phase of strategic growth.


Position Overview:

The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting activities of the firm, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance. This role is critical in ensuring the firm's financial health, supporting decision-making at the executive level, and streamlining accounting operations.


This is an on-site position, 5x in office and located in Manhattan.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct and manage all aspects of accounting operations including billing, accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, trust accounting, and payroll.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Oversee cash flow management, bank reconciliations, and trust account compliance (IOLTA).
  • Lead budgeting and forecasting processes; provide financial analysis and variance reports to leadership.
  • Ensure timely and accurate client billing, collections, and revenue tracking.
  • Maintain internal controls and develop firmwide financial policies and procedures.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff; coordinate with external auditors and tax professionals.
  • Collaborate with department heads on financial planning and resource allocation.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with all regulatory and client reporting requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in financial management within a law firm.
  • Strong understanding of law firm financial structures, including billable hour models, collections, and trust accounting.
  • Proficiency with legal practice management and accounting software (e.g., Aderant, Elite, ProLaw, QuickBooks).
  • High level of integrity, analytical skills, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with a collaborative, problem-solving mindset.
