The OSP Communications Ground Hand Laborer is responsible for working with your hands and assisting directly and indirectly with Equipment Operators, Lineman, and Splicers. Laborer's jobs include assisting in the placing, rearranging, and removing poles, conduit, cable lines, handholes, pedestals and drops. You'll work with cables and conduit to perform maintenance and new build on outside plant equipment. As a Laborer, you'll assist in installing lines and cables (including strand, fiber, coax, and copper) alongside equipment operators to dig holes and bury cables. Most often, you'll work outside as part of a team performing installation, maintenance and repair on facilities that start from outside the Central Office (CO) and stop at the terminal or at a customer's building.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Work with Aerial and Underground OSP Construction Crews
  • Fill out paperwork as required
  • Flexibility to work across all divisions (underground and aerial)
  • Performs other duties as requested by crew foreman
  • Keep detailed record of work activity
  • Work with hand tools

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and/or QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED, technical or college degree preferred
  • Ability stand, walk, crawl, and work in all environments, on ladders, in attic spaces, on ceilings, in tunnels, on poles, and in trenches to access various installation and construction points as required
  • Valid Driver's License is required
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends
  • Exhibit a tendency for continuing education and self-improvement
  • Exhibit industry awareness

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before employees of the organization.
